An Aged Elephant And Master Of The Grill

Tuesday July 25th –

I had been hired to make a unicorn cake for a birthday and that morning was my time to finish creating it, as I had the cake and icing all ready.

Things started going from sort of bad, to worse and then just plain awful real quick 😜

The cakes sides had crumbled a little more than I’d hoped for an easy icing process and the no name brand of icing, though it tasted fine, went on fairly sticky and began dripping off the sides.

I figured the fondant would fix that issue and then it would continue on simply from that point… but no.

The fondant was a different brand from last time too and though it rolled out decently, as soon as it hit the icing, the two immediately bonded in a gooey, sticky mess.

Creating awful folds and wrinkles, unable to be moved or flattened in any way and the animal cake it would have created would have been more likened to an aged elephant than a majestic unicorn πŸ˜¬πŸ˜

I texted the recipient, asking if an iced cake would do instead of fondant and that was accepted.

So another cake was baked and set aside to cool and decorate the next morning, as my next days work had been perfectly canceled πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

I was just hoping I’d have enough of the white, homemade icing left over to cover the cake and decorate the unicorns mane without having to make more 😬

That mess was all cleaned up and tools set aside and I got ready to go to the city with Mom to pick up the sister and her wee ones.

Before that though, I dropped off my largest order of cement pieces yet.

So, if you are looking for my pieces, you can now find them for sale at TR Petroleum in Hague! 😁

It’s a small, local gas station that has a selection of local products.
Jewellery, purses, clothing and now, cement decor pieces πŸ˜‰πŸ’•

Let me know if you check them out! πŸ˜„

On to Costco we went, needing provisions for the extra humans soon with us and then to the airport to sit and wait for said dears πŸ˜βœˆοΈπŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘§

Home was arrived at late that evening, all of us tuckered out from the day, whether it was from failed baking or much flying 😜

Wednesday July 26th –

A fresh new day and a fresh cake to try decorating 😬

All my fingers were crossed in hopes that it would turn out and luckily and happily for all involved, it did πŸŽ‚πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

Mom helped get the sides iced all clean and smooth ( I can’t learn it all at once πŸ˜‰) and then I set to work, piping out little swirls and flourishes, all topped off with sprinkles and mini marshmallows πŸ’•β˜ΊοΈ

Lunch was a some lightly topped flatbread, which then got BBQ’d.

Sesame oil, cherry tomatoes, basil, feta, bacon bits, lime, salt and pepper were all tossed upon the breads and then topped with fresh picked pansies from the niece after they were grilled πŸ˜‰πŸŒΏπŸ…πŸ₯“πŸ§€

They were pretty good, a little too toasted… but I made no claims to being a grill master 😜

The other sister came over so the kids could play, baby be seen and her too of course πŸ˜‰
They stayed for the remainder of the day, having an ultra delicious supper of cabbage rolls and farmers sausage with us.
Followed by coffee and the cake which had been utterly destroyed in the looks department😜

The mom and sis wanted to go for a walk but Al and I did not, so we went to our place in MacDowall with Uncle Mike.
I hauled scraps while the niece battled the mosquitos and picked some of our raspberries.
Which were abundant…the bugs and the berries 😜

Hello humans 😊 This is where you learn about me I suppose, though anyone reading this right now most likely knows all the boring details ;) I am Jessica Rose Peters-Hagenouw. (Always thought I'd be able to pronounce my married name but hey, life doesn't go as we plan.) June 11, 1995, tis the day Robert and Bonnie Peters received the most adorable, amazing, wonderful, surprise 3rd child they could have dreamed of. Speaking of being the third child, I have an older brother and an older sister. Both of whom are married and have wee little families of their own, making 'Aunty Jess' another name I go by. I grew up and have lived all of my years up till November 2015 in Saskatchewan, Canada. Making summers that are extremely short and winters that never end, vast open spaces, northern lights, unthinkable amounts of mosquitoes, lakes, forests and people waving to you on the grid road all different things that mean = Home. But Home is not where I'll be for some time. My husband is a Dutchman, living in Europe. Therefore I too have been living in Europe for the last few months. The reason I started this little blog/journal/writing thing, is to document a bit of my "whole new world," for those at home who wont be awake at 3:00 am wanting to hear about how I couldn't find flour at the grocery store. Thanks for stopping by and taking a peek into my little life 😊
