Seeking Out Sources Of Delight

Day 4 – July 26th, 2020

We slept in a little bit and decided to forgo the whole ‘breakfast out’ experience, as we had enough snacks to get us going until we needed lunch on our journey from Jasper to Canmore.

The first stop along the route was at Athabasca falls.

The tumultuous water came crashing down, being pounded against the canyon walls below, spraying us with mist and bathing the viewpoints in a coolness only rushing mountain waters like that can bring.

We had beautiful weather and the time passed quickly with the many interesting views to be taken in along the way.

We paused at anything we deemed necessary and after driving past some icy aqua shades of water that ran through a ‘field’ of flat rocks and clay, we turned around to go explore there awhile… because I really wanted to, even though there were no easy pull offs 🤪🙈 Mountains are cool (Hah, get it? ‘cool’🤪) but it’s the water bits with the innumerable shades of blue, that never fail to make my heart pitter patter.

The water was as refreshing as one would imagine, ice cream headache style numbness taking over in seconds, since it was actual run off from the nearby Columbian Icefields 😅
I’m glad I got to dip my toes in it though… even if rocks aren’t as gentle on my aged feet as they once seemed 😜

We may or may not have ended up with two small/medium rocks in the truck cab as natures souvenirs… if one can’t find shells, one can always find rocks and sticks 😉👌🏻

We stopped for lunch at the Glacier Discovery Centre.
It was wonderfully sunny out, so we enjoyed a tasty (and surprisingly affordable) poutine out on the patio, looking out to the Athabasca Glacier.

Enjoying the sunshine but also getting that refreshing breeze off the nearby ice.

Not far from there, we had to get a little splash of gas at the Saskatchewan River Crossing pit stop, the only gas station between Jasper and Banff.

Driving over the North Sask. River bridge, brought with it slightly different coloring and surroundings than the usual Saskatchewan river sidelines we get to see 😉

The wildflowers/weeds that dot the ditches and hills make for such nice little sprinklings of color and this lake was a gorgeous backdrop.

A color I don’t think I could ever tire of seeing.

‘Blue color is everlastingly appointed by the deity to be a source of delight’ – John Ruskin

When we reached Banff area, we were going to attempt to see Lake Louise but that turned out to be a sight we shall have to save for next time.
People and vehicles wreathed all around, parking lots were filled, traffic control directing everyone everywhere and no semi easy way was available to spot the landmark lake.
It was disappointing but we didn’t lack seeing beauty on the drive up till that point, so we continued on, pausing awhile in Banff itself.

We sat by the Bow Falls awhile, enjoying the sunshine and planning out what we wanted to do before heading to our place of rest in Canmore. I wanted at least one souvenir sweater or shirt as I never actually buy those type of things and one was actually immediately found 👍🏻

Mike had gotten us a room at the ‘Creek Side Villa’ and the modern rustic interior immediately charmed us.

We used our room as a menu searching location before heading out for dinner at ‘Blake’.

I wasn’t really impressed with my meal (which aside from pretty much being fancy bacon, was also missing the sauce) or the service, so it felt like a bit of a let down and after making mention of it to our server, she casually said she’d let the management know and just handed us our bill 😏

We drove to a little parking lot to look at an advertised ‘Quarry Lake’ and immediately left it… as it was the least attractive/most people packed little body of water we’d yet to see 😜
There were many elk grazing all around the area though, being thoroughly adjusted to the presence of humans and not at all perturbed by the many people ‘taking pictures of the deers’ as one man behind us stated 🤪

I was feeling pretty sore and we were tired of being on the go, so we decided to relax at the hotel the rest of the evening.
Enjoying our room, AC and a king size bed to watch movies in until we got sleepy 😋👍🏻

Oh, Baby 😳

Well, if you haven’t heard it yet via the Instagrams and the folks who assemble there… then I’m a little surprised but it’s totally fine 🤪

First question – Due date?

Come September (9th if we are trying to be specific) of this year, our family is going to grow by a mini person 😬

That’s right, we’re expecting.

That still sounds so weird ^ 🤪😬

As of this moment, I’m 16 weeks along with our visit ever offspring and things have been going good 💁🏻‍♀️

Which leads us to the second question- How I’ve been feeling?

I experienced ONE instance on a Sunday morning while preparing for church, where I suddenly got nauseous and hot and shaky but as soon as it came, it then left, never to happen again.

Thus far 😜

There was also a week or so nearer the beginning where I slept most of the day and felt hungry but absolutely nothing held appeal and opening the fridge invited disgust, so suppers for hubby were, lacking 🙈
I consider those symptoms prettttty minimal compared to things I’ve heard others go through during this stage of life though 😬

Now it’s mainly been hunger and having to eat ASAP 😜
Which doesn’t stray THAT far from my usual I guess 🤓

Next question – Are we finding out the gender?

YES! I’m not a patient person when it comes waiting for a thing that could otherwise be known and neither is Mike, so the decision wasn’t even really a decision, so much as an appointment booking 🤪

Now it’s your turn to answer questions that I have!

I can give as little, or as much detailing about this all, as you want.
I don’t want to overdose you on stories and happenings to do with this ‘situation’ 😜 unless the information is desired.

Do you want to know who we told, when and how?
Do you want to know room plans, LIFE plans?! 🙈

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW ?! 🤪

Keep in mind that the above question is asked in an ‘only slightly raised volume but mostly nice and happy’ way… I know caps can be confusing 😉

Destination 3 Of 3

April 21st –

Sunday morning, the one that’s always slightly hurried, filled with preparations for church and eating of breakfast before heading out the door 🙂

Mike and my attendance, added greatly to the number of Caucasians in a congregation of a few hundred people, so it was a slightly more robust song service than what we are generally used to 😉

After church we did a quick grocery store trip, Mike and I finding some more items to take home with us and crossing fingers the suitcases wouldn’t be too full, still holding the gifts for Holland as well as all of our new purchases 🙈

After lunch, we made our way to a cafe to enjoy one last coffee and sweet together.

They ALSO had a lemon meringue, though I should have resisted temptation because it was the least delicious of the trip 🤪

Once back at the house again, we began the packing of our things, preparing to leave later that evening so we could grab a bite to eat before checking in and flying around 11:00. It was such a nice time to fly, giving us an entire day during our last and making it seem not at all as if we’d be traveling.

I say ‘we’ packed but really it’s Mike who ‘packs’… I sort and fold and pick the required things but he typically places it all 🤪

We visited away the remaining time together, happy for having been able to enjoy their company and hospitality for a second time in two years 😉

April 22nd –

Our night passed by on the 11 and a half hour flight back to Holland.
I had it in my mind that it was a 9 hour flight but due to us having moved from Joburg to Cape Town area, that was false information 🤪
All I can say is that I was still so thankful for not having the usual flying symptoms of not being able to sleep and an upset stomach.
I downed my sleeping pill, gave Mike a half (since he’s not so used to having them) and slept for the most part until there was 3.5 hours of flight remaining.
Which is nothing less than a miracle compared to my other flight experiences 🤪👍🏻

Not all of the tulip fields had been harvested yet, so we got to enjoy them from the sky 🙂

The parents in law were our pick up committee and the hour ish drive back to Doesburg began 🙂

We paused the drive to stop at one of the rare Starbucks locations they have and I think it was one of the most delicious Starbucks drinks I’ve ever drank 😅
It tasted JUST like home and maybe I’m just super picky and stuck in my ways at the ripe old age of 23… but none of the coffee during our Africa/Holland trips, ever satisfies.
We may be driving back 50 min for a coffee again before the trip is over 🤪

Once we arrived back at the house, it wasn’t long until a nap ensued.
Instigated by Mike I will add, so you’re all aware it wasn’t just an idea from me 😜

But first Mich got a helping of apple tart made specially for his arrival 😏

My special treatment came later for supper and a meal of broccoli tart was happily indulged in 🤤👍🏻

While the men began setting up the scaffolding and paint supplies for the next days work, which had been saved for Mike to tackle during our stay, us ladies went for a walk, enjoying the warm evening🌤

Top 5 Travel Destinations

Well, as we get ready to start another year, plans are made and perhaps, vacations booked 😉
Thus, I decided to write up a little post about our top favourite places.
It’s so hard to narrow a list like this down with weather, location and overall experience playing such a big part in how a person remembers a place but I’ve tried my best and would love to also hear some of YOUR favourite places or, least favourites🤪

Also if you’ve been to any of these places, what your experience was!

Also, for almost all of our accommodations, my husband has booked us places using Airbnb.
We’ve gotten great deals, helpful service via Airbnb customer service and stayed at places that give off such a different vibe then the classic hotel room. I highly recommend 👍🏻🏘

I’m excited to finally share a slice of a project with you all, which I’ve been working on for the last couple months ☺️

I’ve wracked my brain and wrecked my posture while working on designs, but now I’m finally able to show one of the finished products and offer it to you ☺️

God’s Been Good

How so very much can change within 365 days.

Last year at this time we were actually in Canada and my sister’s family too, but we were only visiting. Not long after that trip, my friend came to Europe to adventure around with us there for a couple of weeks, as we had our apartment.

Now, only one year later, I’m here in Sask. alone, because Michiel returned to visit HIS family back in Europe and our apartment there will go from being rented out to officially sold to the tenants.

We moved to Canada after lots of paperwork and prayer and we felt that God opened some paperwork/housing/job doors just perfectly to lead us where He wanted.

So after one last visit in Europe from my Mom, (during which we got to witness the Azure Window in Malta, days before its collapse), the apartment and our lives got packed into crates and suitcases, Mike and I left on wonderful trip to South Africa and then we moved into my parent’s basement the spring of 2017.

We not only bought a home in the small ‘Hamlet’ near where I grew up, but Mike majorly renovated it and we finally moved in at the beginning of December! 💕🎉🏡 Continue reading “God’s Been Good”
