Fuelling Up On Family

10/09/21

That morning we had to get our covid tests taken care of, to have them ready come flight time, and after those were done, we drove to meet up with the parents, to visit Mikes uncle for a bit.

Lake got to swap cars, and go for a ride in the convertible with Opa as we left there, heading for the great grandparents house 😏

854619DD-2BF0-4A5E-9653-7CE503DC757A

They have a dog, Rose, whom Lake thoroughly enjoyed, giving her open mouth kisses on her nose and all 🤪

040B3986-6024-4CF6-9BED-38280B0388D3

More family came, and some afternoon visiting took place.
After which, we left, and did some more family visiting 🤪
Making full use of our second to last day 😉

B48452D2-910B-43C0-A9D6-AB5B3EAFFB99

We visited, were served more cappuccino’s as well as some peppernuts, and filled up on a little more family time, whilst it was available 🙂

After getting back to the house, we quickly freshened up, said goodbye to Lake, as he was going to spend the evening with his grandparents, and we were going to go out for our sixth anniversary dinner date ☺️

4C273044-E0EB-4DD7-87E3-A7B0EED1838E

The sky and airplane trails mixing with the sunset, put on an enjoyable show for us as Mike drove us to  Doetinchem, a town I’d actually not yet been to.

0600F47D-A50F-4B8F-BDF0-C3C5CAFBE147

We parked, and then walked the streets to get to the restaurant Mike had seen online.

20F1E4CE-3832-4C7E-AFD9-592A04CE4D34

Though we passed many other interesting looking  places to put on our ‘to eat at’ list 😉

A0EF2CE9-EE68-4C57-9158-B79A73DA24FE

We started with a tasty appetizer platter.

02A7073B-B3A8-493B-93A5-7381A8D389F6

Shrimp, fried shrimp, bitterballen, olives, bread, spicy broccoli soup, ribs, carpaccio and dipping sauces.
The ribs were very tender, and so tasty. The crispy fried shrimp was enjoyable, Mike got all the bitterballen 🤪
The actual whole shrimps, creep me out a little bit, so while they were good, they were also a little bit tricky to get down 😂
The pleasant carpaccio was topped with cheese shavings, pine nuts, and arugula and the broccoli soup was really good, all be it, confusing 🤪
The little shots of soup were swallowed, and at the start, the flavour was just ‘broccoli soup’, then it turned to ‘oh, a really nice broccoli soup’, which then turned to ‘oh wow, that’s a hit of an unexpected  kick!’ 😅
We cleaned up the remains of that platter, then waited for our main dish to come.

And waited. And waited 🤪

174598FA-2CDA-4A05-BCA4-F3282AA9A15F

It ended up being over an hour for our main dish to come, which maybe isn’t the most insane of waits, but it felt like forever 😂
The appetizer was for sure more of an enjoyed moment then the burgers that followed, but it was fine and we ate them, and departed 🤪

0FDCEA10-4815-4F95-8B5F-2710CFD63B50

The slanted ceiling in our room was often the cause for many a head bang, but the window there, also often afforded a nice morning view 😉
It was the typical Sunday morning. Prepare, eat, out the door, an hour or so drive to church.

6E416808-FDA1-465B-BE5D-F5047E394E70

That Sunday the sermon was actually spoken in English, by a family friend whom we know from the states 😅
So, Oma Inge took Lake to the baby room, and I got to sit and listen to one more, entire service, since Lakes birth 🤪
We mingled for a good chunk of time after service ended. It being our final day to see any of them, and wanting to get in one one last hello, and goodbye.

I also had my first ever, completely bilingual conversation 🤪
Meaning someone spoke Dutch to me, and I answered in English and I think we actually managed to make sense. Don’t ask her 😂🙈 I do live with a slight fear that I was answering her, completely wrong 🤪 It is an odd realization, knowing that you can possibly get the idea of what someone is saying in another language, but not having the words to answer them back in it. I guess it’s not that strange, especially for those who’ve grown up speaking multiple languages but for my little brain, it felt interesting 🤪

Not long after we got back to the house, Mikes sister and her kids also arrived.

One last group bike excursion was taken by Opa, Oma and their group of grands, while we stayed back with Judith and her youngest, who wasn’t feeling the biking vibes 😉

0FA4D73A-CA77-4637-850E-ED773F6D2F82

Our opa and oma joined in on the visit not long after 💗

7B2924A8-A80F-47CF-BB47-498FEF114B73

It was a lovely time, spent soaking up the last of the visiting and eating, being served our favourite broccoli tart and of course, one more after eight crème dessert for Mike 😉

ABC6968B-6159-47D8-8946-7ADCB3A609D4

Aunty Judith thought she’d do something nice by giving Lake a bath with his cousin, and it was going fine, until the ‘fun’ blue bath coloring was added 😅
There was no calming him down from the shock of that, so the bath was quickly evicted 🤪
Memory made 😂

A time of song ensued before goodbyes and goodnights were said.

D64CAFDB-D581-43A6-87FF-D2E4E2F02115

Lake loving the guitar and songs, all the while doing his best to imitate the actions that went along with them ☺️

4CBF1170-BD36-4588-B691-997852842666

Mike always postpones the packing for as long as he possibly can, which drives me a little bonkers.
But he’s much better at it than I am, thus I just wait until he deems it time 🤪

We started that night, mostly due to my harassment 🙈😅

Picking Up Our Parental Duties

10/05/21

The view we awoke to, was slightly different than the previous mornings 😅

D5996FC8-075F-4EB7-9C2C-72FE320CE5C6

I had no idea where we had driven to the previous night, and asked Mike how long it would take to get back to his parents.
He said we could text his mom to have cappuccinos ready, and that would be about how long it would take 🤪

So, about ten minutes later, we pulled into the driveway, Lake being held up in the window to see who was arriving 🤓

52C9B394-1616-4CDD-A950-AE361868A136

We greeted him with gusto and he began babbling and wanted to go back and forth within seconds, between Mike and I for a few moments 🤪💗

531E9C50-0D40-4FC2-B684-3427E09E1429

The RV was slowly unloaded, bedding brought in, refrigerator emptied, and our things being hauled back to the top of the house to our room.
Some of Lakes cousins came for a visit later that afternoon, so he was preoccupied with them, and they with him 😉👌🏻

I tried to catch up on blogging.

939E57C0-D896-4D78-84B7-42C402BACEF6

I wrote but I did not catch up, as this post is the very proof of that fact 🤪🙈

Oma took him out for a bike ride and then later that evening we got to catch up over coffee and sweets in the living room.

C8EDBD2B-6907-4CCB-A720-3FD52636C834

Where Lake promptly made himself at home upon the coffee table.

C5F2160B-0187-492B-936B-C47482ED7367

You leave for a few days, and the opa lets the little guy take over 😉😜

10/06/21

Memory has once again failed me as to what occurred during much of this day, but I believe we stayed around the house for the most part.
We did go out to a Dutch grocery store or two, to purchase the last of the Dutch items on our ‘take home’ list.

For humours sake, I photographed the size of their sugar bags.

06788D40-F9B5-4EC9-9106-00B6ECCAEF85

It was so funny/unbelievable to me the first time we went grocery shopping there when we lived in Europe, and this was the size of sugar bag I was told they use 😅 Memories 🤪

We were going to the brother and sister-in-laws for supper that evening, and as they are in Germany, we got to stop at a German grocer too 😏 Where I remembered to take a picture of the flour bags as well 🙈

8C28639F-76EF-4146-B542-FB1C4548AEA5

Schnitzel round two was partaken of.

And enjoyed just as much as round one had been 😉

After dinner and dessert, important things like massages took place 😉

10/07/21

I woke up to the boys making coffee, and heating up some breads purchased the day before ☺️

After Lakes morning nap, we went out to do a little afternoon shop perusing.

A3DD1A5C-F6FF-467E-93F0-F81EB254C363

Finding things that we could not take home with us 🤪

We had to get back home for the little to get in another nap, and while he slept, Mike went out and got us ice creams 😋

8897B5FA-0FFC-48E6-934B-1C310DA82604

He also got me another margarita pizza and himself, the Chinese loempia, one last dish on his ‘to eat’ list 😉

5FA5805F-AAA4-484F-A64F-9C581CB204F1

Though Lake had supposedly done very well when we were away, napping easily and sleeping through the nights, once I returned, he showed his emotions about our having been away.
Requiring me to rock him fully to sleep, lay him down as gently as possible, before tip toeing out of the room, hoping I wouldn’t have to do it all over again if he twitched open an eyelid.
That went on every night, until we left.
Where as before we’d went on our road trip, we were able to lay him down with a bottle, leave the room and that would be that 😅

Savouring – The Snuggles, The Food, The Family Time

09/26/21

Lake and I had church from the couch on this specific Sunday.

He slept in until 10:30 and was back down for a large nap only an hour and a half later, after only having laid on the floor, or me, during his awake time between. Refusing any food or drink, aside from coffee 🤪

I can’t lie and say I didn’t actually sort of like the snuggles and calmness 🙈
It truly was the first time in his first year of life (aside from the baby days when he didn’t really have any say 🤪) that he willingly clung to me, and wanted to continue doing so 💗

The rest of the family that had attended church, returned with lunch from another Greek restaurant that we had on our ‘to eat’ list 😉

We decided that it did have the better meat compared to the first Greek restaurant we’d went to.
Looks aside 🤪 Why does it seem like some of the tastiest foods, look the least appealing?
So, if you’re ever in the area, make a point to go to ‘Grill Am Bahnhof’ and order Gyros, you can thank us later.

Lake stayed asleep until after lunch, which is always a nice treat 🙈 Once he awoke and seen the kids, he really perked up and seemed to be doing better ☺️

We went for a little visit to some family/friends from church later that afternoon and then popped in to say hello to some more family after that 😅 Mike has no shortage of family, friends and friends like family and so on and so forth, so if we ever had ‘spare’ time, it wasn’t hard to fill 🤪

Originally we’d planned to go back to John and Inge’s that evening, but after learning they’d both be working, we figured we’d might as well stay another night at the sisters, if she’d have us 😉

Once the children were all in bed, we were treated to an evening spread of veggies, sausages and bread with a feta/tomato dip 👌🏼

Untimely Unwellness

Saturday morning began with a family breakfast ☺️🍞🥐🧀🥓

Afterwords, Mike went to the barber, Tim, our nephew going with for some guy time 😎 They returned with churros 🤪

95F108FE-792B-40C0-A03B-BE8DAC0FE929

During their time away, Lake was entertained by aunty and uncle, and I got to relax.

29F7275A-0663-4B01-9223-9C1B2837164D

Writing and being served coffee 😉

F8363994-5D75-4603-B49D-8055B5C42FF1

Judith and I went for a 6 km walk, knowing the rest of our day probably wouldn’t hold much movement, as we were headed to a garden party 🤓

2F3C6783-005A-4A5A-8E01-F35652C0B67C

Walking a new route with a new companion (no offence to my regulars 😉) surely makes the walk go by quicker 😅

423E8080-02E2-4F62-854C-61A7C7F7ED07

Lake had been fading in the health category for a couple of days, but it was really showing up this day.

FF3C54FC-78EB-4464-99CE-C61667611CD8

Snuggling with us after his nap instead of jumping up and wanting to be taken out of the room to play, and then slowly becoming more and more clingy as the day went on.
By the time we got to the garden party, he only wanted to be held and didn’t want to play, or eat anything aside from watermelon. All out of the ordinary for him 🤪

A7E7C3BB-9716-4926-8CDA-FFBD3F9B9C4B

We partook of all the food items available, enjoying the variety of goodies 😉

CA042504-50B9-4157-B814-13B5DD8028A1

We eventually took Lake for a walk in the covered wagon supplied by our hosts, to try to get him to sleep. It worked… for a few minutes.

819153E9-5E35-4104-9A16-D5071FF73F41

He then just lounged in it, as he was gazed up and wheeled around…

C685B5FC-9D18-4962-B9B5-8CECF1AA9B94

making it really seemed like a pretty luxury accommodation for a special occupant 🤪

Dinner was served, and we happily indulged in that as well, of course, as we’re no strangers to accepting food 😉

3CE6CECB-1C8A-4136-82AE-62FBE68E727C

After that, we took Lake inside where it was a cooler and less strenuous for our arms, as we could sit on a big comfy couch with him.  Mike went back out to mingle after Lake settled a bit, and I stayed until he fell asleep… and then I actually fell asleep for 20 minutes too 😅

7DC3DD20-11A2-461F-A30F-CF13286901D2

I felt bad once I awoke, as they’d put a note in the doorway to be quiet because there was a baby sleeping…but it wasn’t just a baby 🙈

5C3ACA32-A53A-48A0-9224-FD5253599B4C

The guys went to play a game of soccer late that evening, after the party ended. So Lake and I were taken home to go to bed.
He threw up before bed, and the poor little guy was very warm and having a hard time getting comfortable.
Making for a pretty restless night, with many wakings due to his cough and phlegm, causing many paci losses and hasty replacements 🤪😞

It was a little disappointing that the day Lake had his first real bought of ‘cuddle inducing, don’t put me down, and comfort me’ sickness happened during a day that held beautiful weather and multiple people I know a bit better than some, and could have really visited with, but that’s life 😉

Where We Once ‘Winkled’

09/21/21

Winkel –  To shop.

A Dutch word that never fails to amuse me 🤪

We’d pre-planned a shopping date with Oma as babysitter for Tuesday, so we readied ourselves and drove to Arnhem.

EC241A20-7353-45B3-8266-B70981AB4ED6

That’s the city we’d typically go to for a day of shopping when we lived here. It’s street shopping, meaning in and out of stores, walking down streets and allies, where I’d be completely turned around and lost if not for Mike always seeming to know which way to go, to get to wherever we are headed 🤪

It didn’t take too long until we felt like we needed food, so we went to one of Mikes favourite places to get fries. Spot him ordering below.

597862C4-E1D0-4EB7-9014-F85F8864FC54

It’s very much a Dutch thing to eat fries, but Mike REALLY loves them.

1C796C22-3479-4F77-9D9A-DD5A3EB6CB63
I love the mayo and peanut sauté sauce that covers up that fact that I’m eating fries 🤪

We walked and shopped and didn’t really find much. The stores being on what I consider to be the slightly pricier side and a fair chunk of them currently having very similar styles.

I always enjoy ‘Dille & Kamille’ a shop with a variety of home and gift items.

B126D7FD-378B-459A-AF84-083E92DE7228

Mike gets sick of my picking up all the little cutesy things, wishing I’d just look at something of substance, but I can’t help that A; little things are cuter and B; we have only suitcase room, so that’s what I’m keeping in mind 😏

This adorable wooden seashell hairbrush set was spotted in a children’s shop. I found it to be extremely precious.

AD191A81-3752-4C1E-A331-531538B40E08F8C91352-4850-4A89-81BF-69996E128F37

The €60.00 price tag meant it stayed there and wouldn’t be a gift for the newest niece though 🤪
A follower wisely reminded me though that there aren’t only mermaids but also mermen, so technically it could have been for Lake 😜🙌🏻

There was a ‘pepernoten’ pop up shop due to it being fall and nearing their Sinterklaas season (look it up if you’re curious, I find it confusing 🤪 It’s like a pre Christmas thing, which is very much like Christmas 🤓) so we purchased a bag to take home. I remember mom getting ‘peppernut’ cookies from the farmers market when we were young, so there must have been a seller of European decent 😊

82175EF5-8A01-42AE-A9A5-50AA8C7E5BDA

Back at the house, nearly empty-handed from shopping, it was decided that a calzone, kapsalon and pasta would be ordered in for supper.

3ADFA776-343D-4779-A2B9-D8F78C78AD01010EF10F-57C2-4B05-9FAD-95CAB6BEC5FC

Babysitting had gone well for Oma, and she’d taken Lake on a 20 km bike exploration 😅

A Mishap Come Midnight…

09/14/21

Lake slept for a couple of hours before waking at 12:30.

As per the usual we tried to lull him back to sleep but as per the other usual, that did not work 🤪

Mike took him down to play for a little while, brought him back up, tried watching Luca, tried rocking and lullabies, then I took him down to attempt some more play and at that point, the overtired crying began and could not be silenced. At which point Mike came down, we hopped in the car and began to drive. After probably 10 minutes, his crying finally eased, and he fell into an exhausted, whimpering sleep.

We drove back to the house,  and fearfully, stopped the car.

Reaching in and extracting him from the car seat as carefully as possible, slowly walking upstairs and gently laying him in bed with us.

Where he lay, finally and fitfully asleep.

After 4 and a half hours of being awake 🤓

Because 5 am is the perfect time to go to sleep for the ‘night’ 😏

We decided to set the alarm for 9:00 anyway, thinking that maybe if we could begin our days earlier, it would help get him into the rhythm of things.

It was VERY hard to open my eyes as that alarm went off, bordering on feeling nauseous 😂

Neither Lake nor Mike wanted to be woken up, but we managed to drag ourselves out of bed.

I made myself an ‘extra strong with an extra shot’ cup of coffee, wanting whatever caffeine was available to counteract the remnants of the night 😅

F4FB0502-4AD7-4C3C-B54C-F492E9B1397B

Lake had a very emotional two hours until nap time, and when it finally came, he immediately face planted into his fuzzy blanket and fell soundly asleep.

85FC7495-7E2F-4E93-992E-942574073482

While he slept under his Aunty Judith’s care, Mike and I walked to town, enjoying the sunshiny weather.

We purchased a sort of coverall that Judith had suggested for Lake. Saying that many children in Germany have them and use them, especially at daycare, as they just slip easily over the clothes the child already wears, but it keeps their outfit clean etc.
It’s like a rain slicker material and probably if we looked at home we’d find something similar, but we were there then, and so we got one 😉

After eight crème was made and served with coffee out on the patio once we got back to the house.

4FC0CD08-EC5B-4CA1-8220-6E4E8B438C8F

It being a desert Mike really enjoys and as it’s made with ‘quark’ which we don’t have at home, he only gets the real variation when in Germany😏  It never used to be a dessert I enjoyed, as I’m not really a fan of chocolate/mint combos. But, something about it has slowly lured me in and though it’s still not something I’d specifically ask for, I don’t at all mind consuming some 😅

Lake awoke and played with the kids while I finished packing up and once I had, we said our farewells there and headed off to see the home some friends were renovating.

It’s such a different process here, with everything being built mainly from stone and brick.
Making for much more work when it comes to the demo part of things 😅

8601240C-EDF0-420D-92A7-7A161B474D4C

Back at their apartment the guys went to grab some Turkish take out for dinner, and it was seriously so tasty 🙈

02AE01D2-EFE2-4611-A1C9-E4C875F64079

I don’t even have a picture of my wrap style dish, but I’d say it was legit a foot and some long… and I devoured it all 🤪

Still having an hour and a half drive back to the in-laws, we left not too late and headed back to Holland.
Lake and I had grabbed a few winks in the car earlier during driving / sitting between stops, but it wasn’t enough to counteract the previous night. Mike hadn’t had any naps, so he was ready for the drive home to be over as well 😬
