Farewells, Greetings And Growling Stomachs

Tuesday Aug 22nd –

The last morning with the sister and her fam.😭

And a sad breakfast of a boiled egg and some blueberries on top of that 😜

A small whirl of packing, toy sorting, item relocating, preparing etc. took up most of their remaining time and then the terrible goodbyes had to be said before Mike drove them off to the airport.

Through the farewell tears, the house began getting a fairly large cleaning.
Mom and I going multiple directions to get most of the evidence of kids having been around, gone 😜

We also exercised and had a snack somewhere in between all of the cleaning and laundry and at almost exactly 3:00, the Aunty and Uncle from Ontario arrived!

We visited with them and then supper preparations came under way.

A light lemon oil, basil and pine nut sauce was made to top our shrimp and wild rice pasta along with a little bitty container of cheese.

As we finished supper, the sister (in-law) and her saplings came over for some evening visiting time before we took the Aunt and Uncle over to see our house before it got dark.

(The evenings are getting darker earlier and it’s a very sad thing 😩)

Wednesday Aug 23rd –

The Aunt and Mother arose early enough to complete their workouts before getting ready and heading into town for a day of girls shopping.

I did no such thing 😜

Getting up and having to measure out breakfast portions and make a lunch according to the leftover portions, seemed like enough physical strain for one morning πŸ˜‰

I defaulted to the Sommerset Rice Bowl and once we were all ready, off to town we went.

The farmers market was the first stop and mom got some micro greens from Pacsa.
On the first pass by them, I hadn’t noticed they were also selling naturally flavoured and sweetened lemonade, coming in raspberry, strawberry rhubarb and peach varieties β˜ΊοΈπŸ‘ŒπŸ»

So as we left and walked by again, they were noticed and readily bought.

The bottles were a little differently shaped then your average plastic bottle, adding in a little cutsie factor, along with the delicious flavours we found inside! πŸ˜„πŸ’•πŸ‹πŸ“πŸ‘

I had to pick up some paint for the house trims, since a grey was chosen and while there, I of course glanced at the wall of color squares 😁

I want ombré teal/mint ish stairs rather a lot 😎

It was then on to some clothes shopping and Nike, I love you, but could you just be a little less expensive or have more sales? 😩

I found the perfect fitting, lightweight, soft, grey sweater that would have made me happy for much time… but the price tag also would have hurt for much time πŸ™„

Why you make such pricey clothes?! πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

It was pretty sad walking past Canadian Tire’s burger stand and smelling glorious things 😬
I had thought being busy in town would make eating less/healthier, easier.
Being busy and going from place to place and all but instead I found it harder.
More smells and sights and man, oh, man why did I agree to commit to two weeks of this 21 (14) day fix thing πŸ˜‚

We finally returned home, all tuckered out from shopping and needing coffee (or tea if you’re my aunt who has life going for her until you get to that whole ‘tea’ bit 😏😜).

Eventually everything was put away, supper prepared and portions dished out.
Us girls complaining of soreness and the guys complaining about hearing about it 😜

The evening was then spent visiting more until it was time…time to trade massages with my aunt, who just so happens to be an esthetician as well as giving relaxation massage treatments 😍
Having an aunt, who just so happens to be one of, if not the best, massage givers, is pretty awesome πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘ŒπŸ»

So the rest of my evening then passed in a relaxed daze🀀

(During our day of shopping, the hubster and uncle had worked on our house, Mike being very pleased to have someone around who knows things about electricity πŸ˜πŸ’‘)

Sommerset Rice Bowl

So, ever since I ate this breakfast dish in South Africa (Sommerset West area to be specific), I’ve been dying to remake it at home.
Since I’m generally not a big breakfast person, mornings have been slipping by and this dish going unmade.
Whether I overslept, didn’t have some of the ingredients or we went out early, it just wasn’t happening !!

Well… today, that was fixed 😏

Now, this is an (easy) rice based breakfast and I know that may sound odd but trust me, its delicious, healthy and filling 😁

(Mom didn’t totally trust me… but now she’s a believer too, so go ahead, give it a shot πŸ˜‰)

I’d Rather Bond By A Pool πŸ˜

Friday Nov 11 –

Felt worse than ever upon waking up, aching again and a constantly running nose πŸ™„

And we’ve even been eating fruit lately! 😳😜

Yogurt and granola was Mikes breakfast of choice, last of the French toast casserole for me and then we got ready to head to Doesburg.

Farewells had to be said to John and Inge since they were leaving for their holiday, so we went over there for a little bit before doing some errands in town.
We left with food since their fridge had to be emptied so stuff didn’t go bad πŸ˜‹πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

In Doesburg we planned on restocking our coffee bean supply but they were ‘closed due to circumstances’… 😳 Now, I really do hope they weren’t bad circumstances and everything was ok… but what about OUR circumstances?? What are we supposed to do if we run out of their beans, our black gold, java, happy juice, the stuff that lets me PERSON?!β˜•οΈ

I had a gift certificate from Inge to use at a store in Doesburg too, so we went there to take a peek and see if it couldn’t be used 😊

It could be!

Love how lots of stores here wrap stuff cutely in case it’s a gift πŸŽ€πŸ›

French Toast Casserole

Here’s the recipe I used for the french toast casserole!

I didn’t have the one from home and the people who could get it to me were sleeping when I needed it so I found this one via Pinterest at ‘ Creme De La Crumb Blog ‘

Below is the recipe I got from her blog but be sure to check out her page, I’m pretty sure I’ll be trying a few more of her recipes πŸ˜‰

Sand, Sun And Souvlaki

Monday Oct 3rd –

We left Villa Levante and headed back down the road to find a coffee/pastry place we had spotted the day before.

It’s awesome sign made it easily remembered and we went expecting good things, which we got πŸ˜„πŸ΄β˜•οΈ

The guy running it didn’t speak much English but he still seemed kind of funny, we’d point at a menu item and ask if it was good or what was better and he’d shrug a little and answer ‘ meh, I don’t like it ‘.
Not really trying to rack up the business it would seem 😜
But he did like one thing which was ‘espresso on the rocks’ so we ordered that, along with classic Greek pastry with vanilla filling, cheese pie and a tasty sesame seed roll with a creamy cheese inside, close to feta but softer and not as strong.

It was all really good and we planned on going back, but right then, the beach was beckoning!

Non tourist season and it being Monday meant that luckily for us the beach wasn’t even too crowded and we were able to rent lawn chairs and a sun umbrella for 6€ and use them the whole day πŸ˜ŠπŸ–

It turned out to be a completely perfect day at the beachπŸ’™

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Mike so relaxed and content to be doing nothing 😜

Not long after sitting down, a few different people selling things came up to us and chatted, offering purses, foot massages and more.

Most were refused but Mike couldn’t resist striking a deal with a man from Nigeria who was selling bracelets.

We soaked up the sun for a while and then ventured into the water.

Photo Creds go to Mike for this pic. ^ I could have taken it I just didn’t want to take my phone out into the sea 😏

It was easily one of the nicest beaches I’ve ever been too!
Soft sand with no chunks of coral or seaweed in sight, calm and super clear aqua colored water, staying shallow enough for me to stand in for a long ways out.

Though I found it best to use Michiel as a buoy since I’m not a strong swimmer and also a tad creeped out after I spotted a creepy little flat fish that blended right in with the sandy bottom he was swimming sideways along 😁

Curtesy of Google ⬆️ Β That is close to what we seen and it was probably around the size of my palm, maybe even a Β little smaller but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t freaky 😎

After our swim we decided it was high time to try the food service available to us.
Not only was it the one of the nicest beaches I’ve been to, but the only one with (super affordable) food delivery rightΒ to your beach chair.

Talk about living like royalty πŸ˜³πŸ˜„πŸ’™πŸ΄

The grilled pork souvlaki was amazing.
Juicy but with edges crisped to perfection and a creamy tzatziki sauce to dip it in, so good 😍

I really don’t remember what else we did in what order, it’s vacation, stuff isn’t meant to be kept track of 😏

I know we sat more, relaxed and got another plate of souvlaki 😏
Also ordered was a Greek coffee which was extremely strong and sweet and had a texture like someone had let the grounds go right through 😬

We went for a small walk and a few odd shells were found, though they really are lacking here… the one fault of Greece πŸ™„

One more dip in the sea and we called it a day and packed up our belongings.

It had been mostly cloudy all day but still very warm out, I didn’t think we had got much sun, until the evening came and the redness of skin with it 😬

We had an early morning planned to go and discover shipwreck beach, so bedtime was decently early and that was okay with us, there’s nothing like a day in the sun and sea to tire a personΒ out.

Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins

Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins

I always do at LEAST a double batch, considering I alone would eat four of them for breakfast if I allowed myself 😜
