A Depiction Of A Departure

As I write the tale of one departure, we’re currently on the road to our next departure, also to connect with the oma and opa, but also Lake’s never before met uncle, aunt and cousin in Arizona 😎🌵✈️

10/11/21

Lake’s cousins had spent the night, so he was retrieved from his room before we could get him, and deposited into theirs 😉

While Mike packed, I took a couple of pictures of photos in some of their old family albums, wanting some to compare as Lake ages.

I too helped pack obviously, even it wasn’t by being the one physically placing items into the suitcases 🤪
Doing that, room checking and tidying, preparing ourselves, the carry on, snacks, toys and travel distractions.
Mike as always, did a fantastic job of fitting in all that we had accumulated 😅🙈

We said our goodbyes to Mike’s mom, at their house 💗😔
She had managed to squeak in one last bike ride with Lake, while we’d been packing 😉

They are much, much more composed and held together than my families goodbyes, but it was of course still sad, tears or no tears 🙈
Mike’s dad drove us the long hour to the airport, detouring into town to find us one last snack bar.
Turned out there wasn’t a snack bar, so in its place, Mike got us a Turkish wrap. An acceptable substitute 🤪

We were dropped off at the terminal, and thus, the trip home truly commenced…

00E80AEC-2067-418A-965D-D257F8B7433E

The airport proved less entertaining to Lake, than it had been on the journey there, so some pre-occupying was attempted, prior to our departure.

Starbucks was purchased for us adults, and I couldn’t believe my ears as the lady ahead ordered a cool lime refresher.
It sounded vaguely familiar, Mike said I should try it, and then, it clicked.
It was the drink that I had so loved, which was now discontinued in both Canada and the US, for multiple years?!
I ordered it, one, cool lime refresher with coconut milk.

One beverage enjoyed, every sip cherished and bringing back all the nearly forgotten longings, just as delicious as I thought it would be 🤪💗

‘Luca’ once again got us through pre flight/take off.

Lake did not sleep nearly as much as he had on the way there. He was pretty busy for a while, and not completely thrilled with the circumstances, but no outbursts or real crying episodes, thus, a complete success in my books 😅

C82AE761-799A-42F9-A5A7-3DB5FF559C8C

Eventually I did get him to sleep, which did take a fair chunk of cajoling mixed with him laying, and kicking me, for 45 minutes 🥴😬 (not aggressively, just in a unsettled way) and then I couldn’t put him down, or he’d startle awake.

764802D8-6FC4-43AF-BC69-62581CE6DB10

I gently handed him off to Mike, who had a row in front of us, once my arms were too tired to go on 🤪
Mike found entertainment in Lake’s array of in flight occupiers for a little while too 😜

78189640-F14B-4B04-A571-6046035E6922

We made it to Calgary and got food, stretched our legs, and did the usual layover tasks and pastimes.

Come boarding time, we painfully took our seats.
The little plane making even me feel claustrophobic, muchless imagining how it made Mike feel 🥴
The chairs were like sitting on pieces of cement after our tired bodies were maneuvered into them. The hot air blasting us pre take off, and the cold air surrounding us the rest of the journey.

Our drooping eyelids catching painful moments of uncomfortable sleep between head bobs, Lake sleeping splayed across our laps the entire time.

C107E48C-E2D3-4CBB-AFD1-D78D68BEE95C

Finally we landed in Saskatoon a little before 9:00 pm. I humorously heaved all of our bags off the conveyer as Mike stood holding Lake and directing me which to grab next, as they all came out nearly one after another🙈

C3A28B2A-361C-43E8-9ABB-9D21FADFD084

Large Mike standing, holding Lake and pointing, little Jess, dashing, heaving bags and depositing them just in time to grab the next 🤪

My parents were our chauffeurs home, and during the drive back, we were entertained by the northern lights.

A pleasant welcome home 💚

There was an array of goodies waiting upon our counter as well. Bread, cookies, muffins, and fridge necessities having been dropped off by family ☺️

469380DA-4BD0-4267-9229-3B8E4B9D265A

Lake had fallen asleep on the drive home, and had actually stayed asleep during the transfer from the truck, into the house, speaking volumes of his tiredness 😅
We too quickly went to bed, all sleeping soundly until around 5:00 am.

And so, the retelling of Lake’s first trip to The Netherlands, has finally been completed.

Much, MUCH later than I anticipated, but I persevered, making it to the end, and did those of you reading this as well.

I applaud us all 😜

Post script …

The yard was covered by a thick blanket of leaves, in all their various shades of fall splendour.
After a morning of lounging, coffee drinking, and slight unpacking, we all headed out into the yard to play in/begin the clean up, of said leaves.

Atlas joined in, and a while later, the cousins had to come over for a hello as well, having been missed 😉💗

E80A470B-7D56-45BF-B6FA-3461B3235BEF

That was on the 12th.

On the 13th, a spot showed up by Lake’s mouth, which I didn’t think much of, as kids get little spots that often disappear the next day.

68A9712B-27BC-42A4-8EFE-70A1E2043439

He was a bit warm, unsettled and come evening, a couple more spots had appeared on his hands, and feet.
I then put it together.
Hand, foot and mouth had been going around in Europe 😬

By the 14th, he proceeded to become more, and more blister covered throughout the day.

DB187B48-F919-4BF6-95BF-6CB9FFC05529

He was still eating, drinking and generally happy, so that was a big blessing, but the blistering looked so terrible it hurt our hearts 😬
I had to take him for a walk later in the afternoon that day to get him to settle enough for a bit of a nap.

BC4E1DDB-F21A-4A01-B48A-AF5385361957

Sad to have missed the part of fall, pre the actual ‘fall’ part, wishing I could have seen the orange hued foliage upon the trees and not the ground🤪
October 15th I called the doctor to just double check that what he had was indeed hand, foot and mouth, and it most assuredly was.

7D5DA387-AE34-4A94-848A-510D807E1E94

She said in efforts to not spread it, we needed to stay away from people for 24 hours at least, after we noticed no new blisters appearing.
So, we didn’t have to quarantine after coming back from Europe… but then Lake and I kind of had to anyways 🤪

EA99FFDA-5988-4870-BDB5-CA59F01C9C43

We didn’t go out and see anyone until the 21st, knowing how contagious and unpleasant it is.
Thankfully, the one day he had seen the cousins before we realized he had anything, hadn’t resulted in any of them contracting it, and neither Mike, nor I got it either 🙌🏻

An older cousin we seen even later than the 21st, for only a small amount of time, did get it. Which seemed extremely weird and we felt very bad, but it was well passed the time period the doctor had advised us of, and literally all of the rest of us who spend much more time together, came through unscathed 🙈

Lake did amazingly with the jet lag once we were back home and settled in, post sickness.
Waking around 5:30 or so for a couple mornings, before settling into sleeping straight through from lay down, until 7:30 or even later.

(That’s not the case anymore, but it was nice while it lasted 🤪)

The End

Day One Desynchronosis

09/11/21

Lake awoke crying about 45 minutes after he’d went to bed, so I settled him down and he joined us for the remainder of the night.

1EB99897-DD64-4D22-ACEE-AC746B493848

So much for bringing his crib sheet from home so his bed felt more familiar 😜 My sleep was restless until around 2, when Lake then awoke, ate a big bottle and didn’t want to go back to sleep 🤪

Mike took him to the play room for a while and then Inge took a turn because she said she was awake anyways. Eventually he began to seem drowsy again, so they tried to lay him down, but that was a no go 😅 So we took him bed once more, where he flip flopped around, watched some Luca, crawled all over us and then finally settled enough to be slowly rocked back to sleep around 5.

36EDD874-2CEB-43C4-A200-0CBC66F60A20

We all slept in until 10:30 and could have kept sleeping, but figured if we wanted to attempt to get into the rhythm of the days ahead, we’d better not. It was just us three for  the morning, as John and Inge had left that morning to attend a weekend church camp being held nearby.

We figured we’d see how the night/morning went and go from there if we’d join them at all or not.

C139A446-92F2-421F-A869-73FC291B5E4E

Mike made us coffee and sugar bread toast for brunch and by the time we ate, tided, cleaned up the room from the night before and got the diaper bag restocked etc.etc. It was time for Lake’s first nap of the day, which he took easily, in his crib.

We had to wake him up in order to go to the camp, which was around 25 minutes away.

He sat calmly and lazily in his car seat (not something he’s really done for any amount of time before🤪) for more than half of the drive, looking up at the trees through the sunroof. Here they let babies sit front facing from 9 months old, so he’s been enjoying the views I think 😉

We shall see how much he likes being faced back again, once we go home 🥴🙈

We arrived, and the meet and greet began 🤪

It was a lot of family/extended family, so it was nice to be able to see them there for a moment even,  in case we didn’t get a chance later on.
Lake did so well with meeting everyone and being squished and squeezed and  handed around, not playing strange or getting upset at all, so that was relieving 😅
So many remark that, ‘he is so soft?!’… I thought all babies were but it’s seeming like perhaps that isn’t actually the case? 😜

He got to meet both sets of great opa’s and oma’s and sat for a ‘four generations’ photo with his great opa Hagenouw, opa John and daddy 🙂

9C362C15-D071-4B23-B90A-66C7B8BF7EF0

We went to a cabin the family was renting for the weekend and used that opportunity to change him out of his wet clothes and give him a snack. The rained on grass having been too much of a crawling temptation 🤪

The coffee table was spread with tea and coffee, cake, cookies and sweet treats. The most classic of Dutch spreads 😉

12C49897-BCE1-4BE6-A301-C34F6B2C239E

I truly still do not understand how they stay so slight of stature here 😅 Bread in the morning, the afternoon and the in-betweens, as well as some warm drinks and sweets sprinkled in and possibly some cakes/tarts depending on where you are 🤪

91087C7E-B142-41F8-83D4-3865280CE9F7

We visited there for a while as the rain came down outside and then Lisanne took Lake to the nearby park before the church service began. Mike wanted to stay for the songs at least but midway through, Lake had more than enough so we tried to quietly exit and head back to the house.

Lake fell asleep on my shoulder a few steps out of the church, which I don’t think has ever happened during this first year of his life 😅

0E783CCE-2071-4B41-A5C1-851A4A6F3310

He’s always been too easily distracted to relax enough to sleep out in the open, since he passed 5 months or so.
The poor little guy was very done with the big day, but he did very well despite the lack of naps and all of the new faces 💗

He awoke at 1:30 am and played calmly for a couple of hours before I got him back to sleep for the duration…

Time Is Messing With My Noggin

Thursday Aug 11th – Friday Aug 12th

(I won’t be separating these two days due to time change messing with my noggin.)

Goodbye day 😔

I didn’t fly until 3:00 pm so it was at least a decent flight time and the morning wasn’t rushed.

Mom helped me pack, because who wouldn’t get a helping hand when filling a suitcase if it’s available? 😏

Travel necessities : Blanket, notebook and pen, cash kept in my handy dandy coin purse, headphones and jewellery close to my heart 😁💕📓🖋💸

I technically didn’t need the carry on for packing space but I needed it in the event that we travel somewhere and do require a carry on sized piece of luggage.
The solution? Fill with salt and vinegar chips 😎

Mom made Dad and I pancakes and bacon for a brunch before we left for the airport.
I drowned a stack of those in cherry syrup and savoured every bite 🍒😊

Goodbye time came… I don’t know if 8 weeks has ever felt so fast.
The summer spent at home was a good one.
Full of family time, sunshine, love and laughter ☀💕👫👫👫👫👭👫💕☀️

Goodbyes don’t get easier.
I know that from having said them multiple times to Pro and the girls (Josh too;) but I now know it personally as well.
No need to go on and on about how many tears were shed and hugs shared but it’s sufficient to say, many 😁

As I said on an Instagram post, ‘How Lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard – Winnie the Pooh’, and that is very true.
I feel so blessed to have grown up with the family I did and I’m already counting the days until I see them again.

As far as travelling goes, my flights and baggage were all surprisingly on time.
I think it’s the first time I’ve ever had a whole travel experience without some small form of delay, mishap, missing luggage or grouchy airport staff.
Speaking of airport staff, it’s getting bad when you recognize some of the people working in the airport…you know you’ve traveled to much wheeeen 😏
(Of course you have the all on time, swell flights when your headed back to real life and not on the way to the actual fun bits 😜)

I had a three hour stop over in Minneapolis  and no stop there is complete without eating at chick-Fil-A and getting a caffeine helper 😁

It was then a 7.5 hour flight to Amsterdam, where the hubster greeted me with roses and macaroons.

Not an awful way to be welcomed back into Holland 😘💕

I attempted to stay awake during the one hour drive back to John and Inge’s but I don’t know why, it was a futile attempt since I hadn’t slept a wink since 6:30 am, Thursday morning 😜

Once at the house I went to stretch out on the bed and that’s where I stayed until… I don’t really know until when.
It all gets foggy about what was done, when and I think the most accurate thing to say would be that I slept a fair bit, or was trying to sleep when I wasn’t yet asleep 😁

3:00 am: Hunger and jet-lag strike.
Thank goodness for the muffins Mike has bought that morning incase I’d felt like breakfast and also good thing that I HADN’T felt like breakfast 😜
