Picking Up Our Parental Duties

10/05/21

The view we awoke to, was slightly different than the previous mornings πŸ˜…

I had no idea where we had driven to the previous night, and asked Mike how long it would take to get back to his parents.
He said we could text his mom to have cappuccinos ready, and that would be about how long it would take πŸ€ͺΒ

So, about ten minutes later, we pulled into the driveway, Lake being held up in the window to see who was arriving πŸ€“

We greeted him with gusto and he began babbling and wanted to go back and forth within seconds, between Mike and I for a few moments πŸ€ͺπŸ’—

The RV was slowly unloaded, bedding brought in, refrigerator emptied, and our things being hauled back to the top of the house to our room.Β
Some of Lakes cousins came for a visit later that afternoon, so he was preoccupied with them, and they with him πŸ˜‰πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

I tried to catch up on blogging.

I wrote but I did not catch up, as this post is the very proof of that fact πŸ€ͺπŸ™ˆ

Oma took him out for a bike ride and then later that evening we got to catch up over coffee and sweets in the living room.

Memory has once again failed me as to what occurred during much of this day, but I believe we stayed around the house for the most part.
We did go out to a Dutch grocery store or two, to purchase the last of the Dutch items on our β€˜take home’ list.

For humours sake, I photographed the size of their sugar bags.

It was so funny/unbelievable to me the first time we went grocery shopping there when we lived in Europe, and this was the size of sugar bag I was told they use πŸ˜… Memories πŸ€ͺ

We were going to the brother and sister-in-laws for supper that evening, and as they are in Germany, we got to stop at a German grocer too 😏 Where I remembered to take a picture of the flour bags as well πŸ™ˆ

I woke up to the boys making coffee, and heating up some breads purchased the day before ☺️

After Lakes morning nap, we went out to do a little afternoon shop perusing.

Finding things that we could not take home with us πŸ€ͺ

We had to get back home for the little to get in another nap, and while he slept, Mike went out and got us ice creams πŸ˜‹

He also got me another margarita pizza and himself, the Chinese loempia, one last dish on his β€˜to eat’ list πŸ˜‰

Though Lake had supposedly done very well when we were away, napping easily and sleeping through the nights, once I returned, he showed his emotions about our having been away.
Requiring me to rock him fully to sleep, lay him down as gently as possible, before tip toeing out of the room, hoping I wouldn’t have to do it all over again if he twitched open an eyelid.
That went on every night, until we left.
Where as before we’d went on our road trip, we were able to lay him down with a bottle, leave the room and that would be that πŸ˜…

Gaining – Both Weight & Elevation

Day 2 – July 24th, 2020

It was a fresh morning with some light sprinklings of rain as we left our Airbnb room and headed off to find breakfast.

We decided to take up our old habit of sharing one order of food, not even for the sake of prices but more so we can eat more flavours per day πŸ™ˆ
Stopping one place, eating, moving on to the next and so on πŸ˜‰πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

‘Toast Culture’ had many good reviews and an appealing Instagram page so we were looking forward to it.
Though the service was good and the food fine, it wasn’t that burst of flavour we’d hoped for.
Having to generously salt and pepper the food and paying $17.00 for the one dish that was mainly a bowl of potatoes.
It was fine and we FELT good after eating the fresher style of meal apposed to some fried platter but it just didn’t impress us as hoped I suppose.

Since we weren’t really filled from that experience, I looked up cafes/bakeries nearby… the desire for a β€˜coffee like’ drink ( since hot coffee lost its appeal over a month ago #pregnantproblems) was strong, I think due to the slightly chilly morning.

‘Chocorrant’Β was found a moment away and we readily ordered their lemon meringue and crΓ¨me brΓ»lΓ©e croissants and a hazelnut coffee.

The croissants were delicious πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ€€

Just like croissants we’d have eaten in Europe but with the added enjoyment of flavourful fillings, of two of our favourite things.
They made up for the breakfast bowl πŸ˜‰

We could then begin our 4.5 hr drive to Jasper.
I succumbed to sleeping the first 2 hours away, pretty quickly.
Mike listened to another β€˜Father Gilbert’ and said he actually didn’t mind it… he’s not usually big on audio books/radio dramas but having nothing to do but drive or talk to a sleeping wife, must have set the right tone πŸ€ͺ

We paused for a bathroom/refreshment break at Starbucks in Hinton and that’s also when I pulled out β€˜the butt pillow’ πŸ˜‚
I borrowed it from my sister, (not as gross as it could unintentionally sound πŸ™ˆ) who’d used it during their road trip from The States to Canada back when they moved.
It’s a gel type pillow that is meant to raise the sitting position for short people, so that the back of the user actually sits in the right spot on the vehicle seats.
It definitely helps πŸ‘ŒπŸ»

Compressions socks were also fought back on… not the easiest thing at any point in life but for sure not with a baby belly, in a vehicle, when the small person is up in your ribs. Mike may have been roped into sock putting on/removing during future wears 😜

Mountains finally began edging nearer but we didn’t see a single animal besides some fenced in Bison way back at the beginning of Alberta 😜

Personal size fruit cups that mumsie had sent with us were eaten…

I only had my little gold spoons from home to bring with and those, along with my silk pillowcase, made for a rather posh looking road trip moment I thought πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‹

We detoured a couple minutes off our main route, stopping at Annette Lake, as I’d read it was a good one to do a little walking at if one desired and that was an accurate description.

With beautiful blue and turquoise waters, sunshine’s and mountains in the foreground, it made for a lovely β€˜first stop’ and we wondered down the paved path alongside it for a little stretch.

We got to our hotel in Jasper not long after,Β ‘HI Jasper’.

A newly built hostel style complex and it was done so very nicely.
Clean simple lines, lots of windows, a nice dining/shared kitchen area if you needed and our room, though a little sterile, was clean and spacious πŸ‘πŸ»

We rested there awhile, stretching our vehicle contorted bodies while searching for where we wanted to try going for supper.

We went to The Raven.

First that is 😜

The prices seemed high, which we pretty much expected but none of the meals really jumped out at us either.
By that point it felt awkward to leave as we’d already been served our waters, so we ordered what sounded like a very tasty Brie and baguette appetizer. Brie, rhubarb date chutney, candied pecans, garlic butter spread baguette and pickled grapes.Β It was very little but VERY flavour filled and tasty, if not actually filling 😜

We walked around town a little more, trying to decide if we should share another meal elsewhere, get snacks and head to the campsite where we’d be meeting friends for the evening or if we needed more food at all.
Turns out we did need more and it was found at ‘Alba’Β πŸ€“

Mich got his β€˜once a trip’ calamari order and I wanted gnocchi but decided to try the duck pasta instead, since I can neither cook nor easily order duck easily at home.

Both meals were very enjoyable πŸ‘ŒπŸ»
Mikes being crispy little strips with a zesty lemon garlic sauce instead of chewy rings and my pasta having a savoury, brown gravy type sauce.

We did not share meals that time and our stomachs protested due to that fact but not in an all together displeasing way 😜

Before leaving town we found a pop machine to fill up a reusable plastic bag boughten from a dollar store at home.
It worked perfectly as an ice pack, as was my intention but I wasn’t sure it would work as hoped πŸ€ͺ

Standing, laying and walking don’t cause too much pain but sitting has proven to result in much upper back/rib pain for over the last month, so I’d been concerned about the icing options.

Leaving Jasper we headed to find the Lucerne Campground to meet up with our friends and family.Β We drove too far due to lack of cell reception for our google maps but by doing so we got to see the picturesque β€˜Moose Lake’ ☺️

By the time we got to the campground, it wasn’t long until the sun starting retreating and we spent our evening around the campfire and under stretched out tarps, due to light smatterings of rain.
Suffering from smoke inhalation and enjoying the conversation until heading back to our hostel after midnight.

Which is probably one of the latest nights I’ve had during this whole pregnancy πŸ™ˆ

Destination 3 Of 3

April 21st –

Sunday morning, the one that’s always slightly hurried, filled with preparations for church and eating of breakfast before heading out the door πŸ™‚

Mike and my attendance, added greatly to the number of Caucasians in a congregation of a few hundred people, so it was a slightly more robust song service than what we are generally used to πŸ˜‰

After church we did a quick grocery store trip, Mike and I finding some more items to take home with us and crossing fingers the suitcases wouldn’t be too full, still holding the gifts for Holland as well as all of our new purchases πŸ™ˆ

After lunch, we made our way to a cafe to enjoy one last coffee and sweet together.

They ALSO had a lemon meringue, though I should have resisted temptation because it was the least delicious of the trip πŸ€ͺ

Once back at the house again, we began the packing of our things, preparing to leave later that evening so we could grab a bite to eat before checking in and flying around 11:00.Β It was such a nice time to fly, giving us an entire day during our last and making it seem not at all as if we’d be traveling.

I say ‘we’ packed but really it’s Mike who ‘packs’… I sort and fold and pick the required things but he typically places it all πŸ€ͺ

We visited away the remaining time together, happy for having been able to enjoy their company and hospitality for a second time in two yearsΒ πŸ˜‰

April 22nd –

Our night passed by on the 11 and a half hour flight back to Holland.
I had it in my mind that it was a 9 hour flight but due to us having moved from Joburg to Cape Town area, that was false information πŸ€ͺ
All I can say is that I was still so thankful for not having the usual flying symptoms of not being able to sleep and an upset stomach.
I downed my sleeping pill, gave Mike a half (since he’s not so used to having them) and slept for the most part until there was 3.5 hours of flight remaining.
Which is nothing less than a miracle compared to my other flight experiences πŸ€ͺπŸ‘πŸ»

Not all of the tulip fields had been harvested yet, so we got to enjoy them from the skyΒ πŸ™‚

The parents in law were our pick up committee and the hour ish drive back to Doesburg began πŸ™‚

We paused the drive to stop at one of the rare Starbucks locations they have and I think it was one of the most delicious Starbucks drinks I’ve ever drank πŸ˜…
It tasted JUST like home and maybe I’m just super picky and stuck in my ways at the ripe old age of 23… but none of the coffee during our Africa/Holland trips, ever satisfies.
We may be driving back 50 min for a coffee again before the trip is over πŸ€ͺ

Once we arrived back at the house, it wasn’t long until a nap ensued.
Instigated by Mike I will add, so you’re all aware it wasn’t just an idea from me 😜

But first Mich got a helping of apple tart made specially for his arrival 😏

My special treatment came later for supper and a meal of broccoli tart was happily indulged in πŸ€€πŸ‘πŸ»

While the men began setting up the scaffolding and paint supplies for the next days work, which had been saved for Mike to tackle during our stay, us ladies went for a walk, enjoying the warm evening🌀

Mall-Nourished

April 13th –

We arose and readied ourselves to leave with one our personal driver/tour guide/shopping companions, to meet the other, for breakfast πŸ˜‰

Eating at Lacoco C Food Purveyors was a very enjoyable experience 😁
The restaurants and food that we held in memory, were indeed the same as we recalled and that’s pretty impressive because I feel like usually people either build up, or tear down in their recollections πŸ€ͺ

The decor and overall ambiance was so enjoyable and the eye could wander they entire time, catching some new detail or feature that begged for further attention πŸ‘ŒπŸ»πŸ’•

I ordered French toast, Mike got an egg and bacon breakfast sandwich and I also got my first juice of grapefruit, pineapple and mint 🀀🍴🍍 Continue reading “Mall-Nourished”

We Write To Taste Life Twice

Saturday March 25th –

Almost the worst I’d felt yet πŸ™„
Waking with a pounding head, aching body and runny nose.

The plan was to get breakfast and then medication.
We made it into ‘Ile de Pain’, the breakfast place Mike had been wanting to go to and
a coco nutty smoothie was ordered to share and I couldn’t taste any of it 😏
Same goes for the scrambled eggs with parmesan and pesto.

Which sounded good, but I unfortunately can’t tell you how it was 😬

Mike had found a farmers market of sorts to check out so we drove there and wandered through it for a few minutes.

It was more of a food market than crafts and since we’d just eaten breakfast it wasn’t the best time to go.
That, mixed with my shivering, loss of taste and smell made it a little unappealing to me but if I’d went in good health I can imagine we would have lingered longer and left fuller πŸ˜‰
Mike did buy raspberries, strawberries and ready to eat pomegranate though.

The sunshine was what felt best to me, so we headed to a beach but the wind near the water proved to cold for my frail self and the sunshine made my head pound😜

So, to a store for medication.
Mike got me some cold meds you drink with water and after downing the very odd tasting/slightly fizzy water, I began improving πŸ‘ŒπŸ»πŸ’Š Continue reading “We Write To Taste Life Twice”

1,754 Km

Saturday Jan 28th –

A fitful nights sleep was had by all.
Surprisingly for Zoe and I, since we’d slept pretty much the entirety of the day before 😜

We quickly found a bakery where a baguette, strawberry tart and citron tart were purchased for some snacks later on and then a grocery store was stopped at for the required souvenir purchasing Mike and I tend to do in at least one grocery store per trip 😏

Then it was a solid stretch of driving, taking us to our trips purpose, Mont St Michel.

We shuttled from the parking lot to the bridge which is now connecting the island to mainland.

A Disney like spectacle met our eyes.

We paused to eat our sweets and since Mike ate his faster than Zoe and I, he didn’t have the same problem we encountered.

Seagulls. Continue reading “1,754 Km”
