Fuelling Up On Family

10/09/21

That morning we had to get our covid tests taken care of, to have them ready come flight time, and after those were done, we drove to meet up with the parents, to visit Mikes uncle for a bit.

Lake got to swap cars, and go for a ride in the convertible with Opa as we left there, heading for the great grandparents house 😏

854619DD-2BF0-4A5E-9653-7CE503DC757A

They have a dog, Rose, whom Lake thoroughly enjoyed, giving her open mouth kisses on her nose and all 🤪

040B3986-6024-4CF6-9BED-38280B0388D3

More family came, and some afternoon visiting took place.
After which, we left, and did some more family visiting 🤪
Making full use of our second to last day 😉

B48452D2-910B-43C0-A9D6-AB5B3EAFFB99

We visited, were served more cappuccino’s as well as some peppernuts, and filled up on a little more family time, whilst it was available 🙂

After getting back to the house, we quickly freshened up, said goodbye to Lake, as he was going to spend the evening with his grandparents, and we were going to go out for our sixth anniversary dinner date ☺️

4C273044-E0EB-4DD7-87E3-A7B0EED1838E

The sky and airplane trails mixing with the sunset, put on an enjoyable show for us as Mike drove us to  Doetinchem, a town I’d actually not yet been to.

0600F47D-A50F-4B8F-BDF0-C3C5CAFBE147

We parked, and then walked the streets to get to the restaurant Mike had seen online.

20F1E4CE-3832-4C7E-AFD9-592A04CE4D34

Though we passed many other interesting looking  places to put on our ‘to eat at’ list 😉

A0EF2CE9-EE68-4C57-9158-B79A73DA24FE

We started with a tasty appetizer platter.

02A7073B-B3A8-493B-93A5-7381A8D389F6

Shrimp, fried shrimp, bitterballen, olives, bread, spicy broccoli soup, ribs, carpaccio and dipping sauces.
The ribs were very tender, and so tasty. The crispy fried shrimp was enjoyable, Mike got all the bitterballen 🤪
The actual whole shrimps, creep me out a little bit, so while they were good, they were also a little bit tricky to get down 😂
The pleasant carpaccio was topped with cheese shavings, pine nuts, and arugula and the broccoli soup was really good, all be it, confusing 🤪
The little shots of soup were swallowed, and at the start, the flavour was just ‘broccoli soup’, then it turned to ‘oh, a really nice broccoli soup’, which then turned to ‘oh wow, that’s a hit of an unexpected  kick!’ 😅
We cleaned up the remains of that platter, then waited for our main dish to come.

And waited. And waited 🤪

174598FA-2CDA-4A05-BCA4-F3282AA9A15F

It ended up being over an hour for our main dish to come, which maybe isn’t the most insane of waits, but it felt like forever 😂
The appetizer was for sure more of an enjoyed moment then the burgers that followed, but it was fine and we ate them, and departed 🤪

10/10/21

0FDCEA10-4815-4F95-8B5F-2710CFD63B50

The slanted ceiling in our room was often the cause for many a head bang, but the window there, also often afforded a nice morning view 😉
It was the typical Sunday morning. Prepare, eat, out the door, an hour or so drive to church.

6E416808-FDA1-465B-BE5D-F5047E394E70

That Sunday the sermon was actually spoken in English, by a family friend whom we know from the states 😅
So, Oma Inge took Lake to the baby room, and I got to sit and listen to one more, entire service, since Lakes birth 🤪
We mingled for a good chunk of time after service ended. It being our final day to see any of them, and wanting to get in one one last hello, and goodbye.

I also had my first ever, completely bilingual conversation 🤪
Meaning someone spoke Dutch to me, and I answered in English and I think we actually managed to make sense. Don’t ask her 😂🙈 I do live with a slight fear that I was answering her, completely wrong 🤪 It is an odd realization, knowing that you can possibly get the idea of what someone is saying in another language, but not having the words to answer them back in it. I guess it’s not that strange, especially for those who’ve grown up speaking multiple languages but for my little brain, it felt interesting 🤪

Not long after we got back to the house, Mikes sister and her kids also arrived.

One last group bike excursion was taken by Opa, Oma and their group of grands, while we stayed back with Judith and her youngest, who wasn’t feeling the biking vibes 😉

0FA4D73A-CA77-4637-850E-ED773F6D2F82

Our opa and oma joined in on the visit not long after 💗

7B2924A8-A80F-47CF-BB47-498FEF114B73

It was a lovely time, spent soaking up the last of the visiting and eating, being served our favourite broccoli tart and of course, one more after eight crème dessert for Mike 😉

ABC6968B-6159-47D8-8946-7ADCB3A609D4

Aunty Judith thought she’d do something nice by giving Lake a bath with his cousin, and it was going fine, until the ‘fun’ blue bath coloring was added 😅
There was no calming him down from the shock of that, so the bath was quickly evicted 🤪
Memory made 😂

A time of song ensued before goodbyes and goodnights were said.

D64CAFDB-D581-43A6-87FF-D2E4E2F02115

Lake loving the guitar and songs, all the while doing his best to imitate the actions that went along with them ☺️

4CBF1170-BD36-4588-B691-997852842666

Mike always postpones the packing for as long as he possibly can, which drives me a little bonkers.
But he’s much better at it than I am, thus I just wait until he deems it time 🤪

We started that night, mostly due to my harassment 🙈😅

The Final Foray Through France

10/04/21

We awoke to a sunny morning, prepared ourselves as best we could in the small-ish quarters and drove back into town. Mike somehow recalling the location of a bakery we’d passed the day before 🤪

7EABDBBC-D428-480B-8FB8-335F1B68C7B4

A display case full of delicious looking temptations was fully stocked, as were the shelves of bread behind the counter.

38C00531-CC9B-455A-AFAB-B65520961673

What a way to start the day 😍
We walked back to the RV, goodies in hand, walking by the ever eye-catching scenery.

94684654-913A-4A54-8891-0F77E238A8E0

Much that we saw, being old walls built from hand-picked and assembled stones.
The labour that was put into the things we so casually pass by, causing one to stop in total awe if you pause long enough to consider what it is you’re actually seeing 😳

Mike drove us to the waterside in Fort – Mahon Plage, so we could eat our goodies with a view.

138DC671-8CFD-43C5-A9BE-0376346DFA02

Not eating them outside, as the wind was pelting sand around and causing a general feeling of unpleasantness 😜

F8CB26F9-2E75-4132-BBB3-C4AA827ACB49

Once we licked the crumbs off our fingers, our drive began again.

E6B79EED-1582-477B-9AEA-20F035A5484D

And I didn’t even relocate to the ‘back seat’ 🤪
We stopped at a grocery store, as what trip of ours is really complete unless we overspend in a local grocer ?? 🤪
This was just a small section of their chip selection.

40B9BF77-7C66-4E62-9C6E-73742959B509

Please take the time to read all of those vastly different flavours 😅🙈
A drastic change from Holland, where they have very few chip flavours (the main one being ‘paprika’) compared to many places.

We journeyed on through little, and large French towns. Pausing at places with viewing opportunities as necessary, slowly moving back towards Holland.

3174E8AC-9FAB-43B4-A1D6-2ED679EB7D95

We considered going to Europe’s largest aquarium in Boulongne-Sur-Mer, but when we drove by, they were closed 😕
Making that probably once in a lifetime opportunity, a non opportunity 🤪

We went into the city then, Mike managing to find a parking spot for the RV, so we could walk around and explore a little via foot.

59716232-2E43-4E03-9AAC-065234C820BC

We walked into what would have been the old city center.

243A2E75-DE01-4093-8E20-856C403678F1

Homes, stores and their massive cathedral, all being built within the confines of a protective stone wall.
People still living and working inside the existing walls, where no cars are allowed, but now with a thriving city also continuing on outside of those walls. Whether because it was Monday or afternoon in France, or both, finding an open place to eat, was once again a little tricky.
We finally found a pizza place and ordered a margarita pizza to go, taking it back to eat in the RV.

The thick, chewy mozzarella atop a thin but still doughy crust, not at all failing to satisfy 🤤

A9880275-639A-44E4-8E36-CA664C04AB23

Two murals were spotted while driving through town, the man in the yellow raincoat was painted by a Canadian artist

E6D68045-F311-4F08-A8B0-FA188956F14A

CAD2B6F5-295B-4FB2-9FBE-E2BB710F8DF8

One more bakery was stopped at for good measure before we left town.

38204AD7-8789-4E9B-A90E-AF96C02DFD0C

We paused at Fort d’Ambleteuse, not realizing that’s where we were headed, but not being disappointed that it’s where we ended up for a little leg stretch.

A44EF46D-C766-44A3-9FED-2DB7D679AFCE

The rocky shoreline was wandered upon for a little while, and then a little while longer once a couple of shells were spotted, as the search had to become a little more serious in its pursuit 🤓

E5114869-1468-435F-ADAF-053907B4DC88

0586BB84-CEB0-48B2-8427-2A14AD32DBEE

We also gathered a special little collection of rocks from there, specifically for Lake 😉

B85682C2-9D60-4CAF-AB32-6D1308B1EB79A toy or souvenir had been looked for, for Lake but nothing had caught our eye. He doesn’t love stuffed animals and hardly any other toys for that matter, but we truly did think he’d appreciate the rocks. Not just because they were easy to get as well as being free 🤪

Back at the RV we took a short siesta, since Mike planned to continue driving later into the day.
Our next stop after restarting the drive, was at a the Calais Canadian War Cemetery.

D53CBE07-43D6-41E1-A6EA-E81C9B8C8784

We signed the guest book and took a moment to ponder the graves.

DA6CB5A4-720E-44CE-981D-C34029B8D694
Being struck by the ages of so many young men, and their sacrifices.

35EC8899-EE59-4205-B3FC-5D71CA8562B6

Wissant was the coastal town we stopped in next, wanting to find a place to eat.

C46B100A-0E4B-460A-978B-FC0B73D955A641574B75-EB30-4296-8495-AE46FB6D1019

A dolphin was the symbol for a street crossing and I wish they were the symbol used everywhere 😅

7C5738A9-350F-4270-B0B1-A2C6B303C2AD

We just missed the time for food being served and were thus stuck with the drink and dessert menu options, so an in house pink lemonade and two crepes were ordered.

D333B858-F878-4101-B4D3-372CDF5858E0

They were tasty, just not overly filling

Next stop – Cap Blanc-Nez cliffs.

43904173-E8C2-4436-ABE3-8DBAACC3711A

Pretty self explanatory, cliffs, by the waters edge.

E9E13B3A-C649-4560-94E4-93C3AF5A2D93

It’s actually the closest point of France to England, and The White Cliffs of Dover can be seen on a clear day.

CF9B54C1-E5E1-45E6-82BD-E7576E3603D0

We had to walk a decently lengthy path to get to the steps that lead down to the actual beach/cliff area.

It looked like it would be overly far to journey down and really go to the waters edge, but in the end we went further than expected.

36F0BB16-1DF3-413D-B1F1-B60D9BF7444E

Our wandering feet and the feeling of adventuring taking over 😉

20CB4406-6AEE-4987-BC52-D949C50F9FED

Accumulating 10,250 some steps by the end of the day, which for a day that was spent driving more than not, isn’t too shabby in my opinion 😉

103FDBBC-F2FF-4785-9732-ABB32CD701D7

Our feet then took a rest, as our bellies took over and the search for food began once again.
We passed this impressively constructed house/fence as we drove towards town.

A6B6F575-EE1B-4689-BED5-CFE694034637

I don’t really feel like reliving this next part, but for your entertainments sake, I will 🤪

A menu outside of a restaurant was read, and it seemed like a decent price for what would come with the meal.
A starter, entrée and dessert.
We figured that since we had an upcoming anniversary and when would we try a semi fancy restaurant during a stint in France again, so why not?

The meal began, with duck.

4D6DBC4A-E0A1-44B1-BF21-CB1BDECC7F71

But not at all the duck that I had hoped for 🙈
Two slabs of cold, fat sprinkled, meatloaf looking duck, topped with a semi sweet pickle, was placed in front of me and thus began the feeling of having made a fatal mistake 🤪
I took my fork and carefully removed a small corner, bringing it slowly to my mouth and using much inner courage, ate it.
It was not ‘bad’ but nor was it what I would call ‘good’.
Mike too tried it and he then admitted that after reading the French menu, he had thought the duck would either be a soup type dish, or what I got 🤪
I wish he’d have mentioned that fact sooner.

Neither of us had any desire to eat the duck, so there it sat. Awkwardly untouched, catching the curious eyes of the waiters and waitresses that passed, unsure if we were done, or simply not hungry.
I excused myself to use the restroom, hoping beyond hope that the waitress would come whilst I was away, but she did not.

I found this situation very uncomfortable 🤪🙈

She finally came, asking if anything was wrong and we explained that we were simply unlearned tourists whom hadn’t expected that type of dish 🤪
A long wait then ensued.
As people around us were served and we waited, and waited.
Our plates were finally brought out, and then quickly taken away! As they were for another table 🤪

So we waited some more 🙈

Finally our dishes did come, Mikes lamb shank being pretty tasty, my fish being fine, just a little boring.

BA5A3584-EDB6-40E8-ACDA-820C2B9EEA53

We never got the wifi password given to us either, and when you’re traveling without any, have routes to plan and a child to check in on, that is a point against the establishment as well.
It was not the worst dining experience, but it just slowly slid into a less and less pleasant one, considering the price and expectations and it just wasn’t the happiest feeling note to end the last meal of the trip on 🤪
We got out of there as quickly as we could, which was not very quickly at all, and hit the road 🤓

Mike then admitted he’d thought all along that we should have just eaten at the next McDonald’s, as he’d rarely been impressed by food when in France.
Speak your thoughts out loud next time husband!
🤪😂

By then it was dark out, and Mike decided he would just drive until he got tired, find a place to park us for the night and call it good.
I retired around 11 or so I think, and he went on until 1 ish I believe…

Meneer En Mevrouw

09/18/21

‘…Going to the chapel, and we’re, gonna get married, going to the chapel …’

… or in this case, not ‘we’, but ‘they’, and in a converted barn and outdoor ceremony space, not a chapel. You get the idea though 😉

Packing and wedding preparing took up the morning, and then we were off on the two some hour drive to the wedding location in Groningen, where our cousin was going to be tying the knot.
We ended up getting to the area a little earlier than expected, so we found some coffee and a cookie to hold us over until after the ceremony.

5E176738-DC75-4B4B-BB9C-D7C2BECECCE3
It was humorous to us that the ‘to go’ cup proudly stated ‘I’m a big, hot cup’ when it was very clearly, ‘a small little cup’ in our Canadianized eyes 🤪
But that’s fine, and the white chocolate chip with macadamia nuts was actually really tasty 👌🏻

At the wedding location, Lake was more than ready to be out of his car seat and or stroller, walking with anyone who’d take him. Though going to anyone who’s willing to have him, has NOT been a problem whatsoever this trip 🤪

7625D7D6-3941-4A13-8730-D92D4CFAE3DD
He and I watched the groom arrive in a vintage mustang, and the bride exit the building, from a little seating area, away from the actual event.
He finally settled down and stopped his possibly unwelcome noises, once he found a stick to scratch the dirt with 🤪
Daddy came for us, saying the announcer had said the kids were welcome to be decently free, since it was a smaller, mostly family wedding, with many of whom, had many small children 😅🙈 So, the stick held him over for a while, then his distant cousin the row in front of us and finally, the baby’s breath decorating the chair, is what took over in the area of distraction until the ceremony ended 😬

4FD4AFAF-8FE1-4D93-B157-99E02B6441F9985A014B-FA6E-4022-A18D-56E9E640DA2A

‘Meneer en Mevrouw Ezra Hagenouw’, were announced 💗🎶💐

66F2BAA4-C549-4CFC-890B-16A5CC52A445
We were then dismissed, and the greetings began as everyone slowly made their way into the open courtyard area for the cutting and eating of the cake.
That is when Lake and I again took our exit, as nap time was due.

2B609A2B-6EA8-453D-B8C5-7A45507A13ED

After sometime, the pleasant weather and jostling of the walk had its way, and Lake entered dreamland.
There wasn’t really anywhere to leave him that would be easily accessible/not loud, so I sat with him outside…catching up on blog writing while I had a moment.
(While also trying to ignore my belly’s disappointment at missing out on the cake 🤪)
45 minutes later, his little nap ended and then his oma took over 😉

A4E0E786-E704-4909-926D-012D5D1229BB

Weddings in Holland generally have servers roaming about, taking drink orders, clearing away old ones. It’s such a nice  feature that makes it feel that extra bit of special. Though that could just be my perception of it since it’s not something I’ve ever experienced at a wedding at home 😋

C9010EB1-B747-49D0-A06B-CEEED66B30F2

2CA0007B-79A4-4F35-8FFB-267C34E99A4E
Chatting amongst the everyone passed the time until dinner was served, at which time Lake become our charge again, and we happily partook of the meal ☺️
An ice cream cart was presented come dessert time.

4B6BCAA8-4AA6-4A0D-B41B-198147ECC618

Meanwhile, I’m not sure where Lake really was or what he was doing, but I assume he was for the most part with either his oma or opa 😅🙈 It was a smaller wedding and Mike was related to, or friends with almost all who were in attendance, so it was a nice place for Lake to mingle.

40CE94E3-C009-4D2D-A99C-5512C2C6932A

He is also the one responsible for the destruction of this hay bale…

The wedding moved into the enclosed side of the building as evening came and brought a chill with it.

The time for speeches, slideshows and games thus began.
Lake’s patience was waning but another nap via the stroller wasn’t going to be an option, as he knew not to fall for such trickery again 🤪

A85CC1A8-22AE-478C-9ABA-47CA1969AA9D
Finally, the night drew to an end, and we drove a couple of minutes to the home of some family we’d be staying with over the weekend.

F41E192B-BDFF-4CE0-91DC-DE33E9F3E762

Lake succumb to sleep the moment we drove out of the parking lot and stayed that way as we deposited him into the crib in our room…

Enroute To An International Introduction

Once upon a time, long, long ago, people could fly and travel and go all over the world and breath
the fresh air as the pleased.

There was a new father and mother living in that kingdom and they’d planned to journey across the lands to introduce their new son to their friends and family, but the rulers of the lands had other ideas and the young families plans were postponed for many, many months…

Now things are a little different & travelling, is a lot more work.

665F3A4F-E490-48BD-98F8-93D46AD862EB

Oh, & now we’ve got to travel with an almost one year old and all of his paraphernalia as well,  so that’s some additional effort as well 🤪😅

3096BA3D-F4A0-4A4C-B3BA-70F30CE9107A

Packing with/and for a child was a slightly different experience. Having to keep everything off of the floor and out of reach and getting much ‘help’ when the task was Lake level 🤪

2976FA71-73FE-4C95-8354-3907F3110E15

Our flight didn’t leave until 5:00 pm which was a nice change and meant we didn’t need to awaken at a stupidly early morning hour and have a good chunk of time at home to accomplish all the last minute tasks whilst also tending to Lake.

The different family members stopped in at staggering time slots, wishing us a nice trip and sending us off with their love and notes.

29C56BCD-1935-4CCC-B8B2-99ADDB43CABA

The check list was struck off, task by task and at 1:30, our chauffeurs arrived and everything was loaded into the truck.

E99E5D59-E53E-4A9C-A2A1-FC6E386F7295

I’m the type of person that gets stressed when I have too many bags 🤪

716E49AF-A26A-4595-9B0D-377D3D8ACDB1

It freaks me out to think I could have so grossly overpacked, so I had to keep telling myself that it was ok, and the reason we needed both carry on’s was due to the fact that we had a suitcase within a suitcase, which took up a decent chunk of its space.

(We were returning a piece of luggage the mother-in-law had left at our house.)

The drive to the airport should have lulled Lake to sleep but instead it was one of his whiniest drives yet, causing a deep feeling of foreboding to settle upon me 🥴

4C3AF82E-699B-45C8-9410-4AFDF24649DB

Once we arrived at the airport, we went to the area that does the c-vid tests and got that over with.

It was a swab up the nose for 5 seconds per nostril. The lady was very nice and though invasive, it was merely an uncomfortable feeling and not painful in the least. We waited for those results and then went on to checking in, which took a very long time 😅

Perhaps it was in part due to new protocols and health measures, but it also seemed like it was all new staff and with so few travels, how does one become competent in one’s  job of checking travellers in I suppose?  They were all very polite and friendly though and that’s a pretty big plus and the airports renovations look nice, fresh and bright  😉

Mother was busy in doing her grandmotherly duties of trying to keep Lake occupied 🥴👍🏻

Meanwhile, us travellers hunger was growing rather large, as we had literally nothing left at home to eat before we departed, aside from the three blueberry muffins my sister had given us the previous day 😅

So, with boarding passes finally in hand, the hugs and adieus were shared and we began our first family trip to The Netherlands.

22840A15-D649-4776-A36D-BA4362BEB85E

Security took awhile due to all of the baby substances of course, but once again the staff were all very friendly and kind and Lakes food pouches of 124 ml, water bottle, thermos of warm water and half drank bottle, all made it through without incident 👌🏻

With one finally wave through the glass wall, (which I find an entire wall of windows kind of depressing… seeing your loved ones but being able to neither touch nor hear them 😒) we went to Tim Hortons 🤪

Lake used his wave to win over the cashier and she produced a free chocolate Tim bit for him.

B5F5446D-953C-42D6-8837-858A4F106235

#Parentperks… cause Lake shouldn’t eat a ‘hole’ Tim bit himself pre flight, sugar rush am I right? 😜

Kidding, he got it all.. he eats tons and we haven’t noticed sugar rushes yet and we were so hungry we didn’t leave much of our sandwiches to share 😅🙈  Mike walked with Lake to get another bagel so Lake could stretch his legs as well as have something a little more filling to eat. He won himself another tim bit 🤪

We were seated in the very first seats on the plane to Calgary, allowing us room but not allowing us to keep our bags nearby so the perk was a little deflated in that aspect.

Mike did most of the mini human wrangling, as Lake did not sleep a wink.

He did drink his bottle during take off and that alone was a shock as he’s usually much too noisy to eat his bottles in public settings. He quickly began waving to all of the stewardess’s and played peekaboo with them. Peering from around the corner to where they were seated facing him. The one stewardess had a little granddaughter with the same birthday as Lake ☺️

He did really good, though he hardly stopped moving and we landed in Calgary sans crying fit/blowout/or whatever else a baby may do to cause upset and or angst 🤪

After walking what seemed like eons through the Calgary airport, we found our area and let Lake loose from the stroller.

E8547398-E82B-4632-A890-713697627A73

I really dislike the travel between gates in the Calgary airport, it being what seems like one long, endless hallway with nothing to see and feeling more like a bare mall hallway or parkade walk, rather than any sort of airport.

Lake got VERY relaxed during that walk but he didn’t succumb, so crawling around ensued.

He’s begun this thing were he tilts his head a little sideways and slightly downward while he speed crawls and it looks so dangerous 🙈 If he’d even slightly trip, it would mean a faceplant on the unforgiving tiled floors of the terminal, but there’s naught to be done about it but watch with eyes half closed until he safely reaches his destination 😂

We grabbed a meal and Starbucks, changed the small person into pjs and administered the drug combination Lake’s doctor had advised for a greater chance at in flight sleep.

A pleasant couple seated behind us offered to hold something for us and we thought they said they’d hold Lake, so that’s what they got! 😂

He was very happy with them and they with he though, so it worked out well, while we got ourselves situated.

‘Luca’ and the in flight safety video distracted Lake during the remaining boarding time and then we laid him down on the seat between us with his bottle, hands at the ready to give him the paci the moment he finished and, thus, he slept 😳

For 6 of the 7.5 hours of flight!

Praising the Lord for this little but actually not so little, miracle 😅

(I’m placing the reasoning of why that happened on all who said they’d be praying for him to do well during the flight. So I’ll be reminding everyone of our departure date so they can pray as they did pre our trip 😅💗)

Mike may have slept a little more than me, but that’s not saying much as I slept for maybe an hour.

Though Lake is only a mini person, he stretched out on the extra seat/overlapped onto us a fair bit. Causing much envy as I looked at all the other folks who had rows to themselves to stretch out on 😬

The airplane snacks provided were nothing special (are they ever really?) yet I still can’t help but love the little boxes and specifically packaged items, pleasing my ‘eat a single item at a time and let nothing touch’ personality, every time 🙈

Mike was allowed to walk around with Lake once he awoke and maybe since it was a night flight they were a bit easier, but there were multiple times I left my mask down or had it below my noise and no one came to reprimand me 👍🏻

Neither of us recall ever having had a 7.5 hour flight before, so that was a pleasant change to the usual 8.5 boarding on 9.

Passport control was a pretty long and people packed process. The whole walking onto a plane with 9 rows of people and then standing in line with so many afterwords, did actually feel pretty foreign compared to what the world’s been advising… I don’t miss the barrage of odours  that come with being by so many humans 😂

Finally, the oma and opa were spotted and once bags were located, we walked out the little VIP
😉

As we stepped out of the airport into the parking garage, a wall of humidity hit us 😅

It felt like the tropics and during the drive home the rain began.

Lake and I dozed a bit and due to traffic, something we’re again not used to,  it took little longer to get to the in-laws home.

We also paused at a snack bar so Mike could begin the trips food indulgence, almost immediately 🤪 I too partook, as I forgot that I also liked a specific snack rather a lot 😅

Nasiballen met mayo & bereklaw met pindasaus.

After settling in and letting Lake stretch his little limbs for awhile, his oma took him for his first bike ride 😉

We unpacked and put our things into drawers… not something I’d typically do, but when staying a month, it felt right 🤪 All the while being serenaded by the birds atop the nearby trees.

We settled in for the night around 8:30, uncertain as to what our night would hold…

 * I ask that you do your best to ignore any spelling mistakes, as on my iPad the set up is different and I can’t find an easy way to do a spelling / grammar check. Thank you for your understanding 🤪

Pooled Together Predicaments & Play

A recounting of our recent attempt at a ‘fun family day’… not something we attempt to do very often, as our family time generally just circles around and focuses on food consumption 😉 It was too long to explain on an instagram story and as it was Lake’s first ‘vacation’ I felt it would best be to be documented here.

It began as I was scrolling through my Facebook feed one day, when a post from a local Saskatchewan page caught my eye.

(It’s found under ‘Cherry Lane Mansion’ on Airbnb, so spread the word so no one else has to fall prey)

It was a listing for a privately owned pool, available to rent out for a few hours at a time.
It looked pretty appealing, was a decent price and sounded like something fun we could do as a family, while waiting for spring to truly appear 😉

So, after showing the rest of the family and glancing at some reviews, a plan was made to make it happen!

The day of our booking came and we loaded up, me with a little bit of cautious anticipation, since I’d had a dream that the guy who owned the place was super creepy and was showing us all of his parrots and telling us his eating plan and wouldn’t leave when we wanted to start swimming etc.😅

But that was just a dream and nothing to be worried about.

Or so we thought 🤪

As we drove towards the address of the pool house, the surrounding homes gave us hope.
There was a large castle-esque home, newly built mansions and the Saskatchewan river was nearby.

Then we pulled up to the parking space of the house that was our destination.
The outside of the house itself was interesting.

The condition of the yard and entrance to the pool area, were also…’interesting’.

We entered the pool area timidly, not really understanding what the host was muttering through his mask aside from him saying something about the water looked cloudy but that it would clear up in the next hour.
(Not great when you’re only booked somewhere for three hours but ok sir 🤪.)

He went out and my sister and her family came in from their car.
The kids excitedly wondered when they could get their swim stuff on and go in and the adults slowly looked around, trying to hold in the grimaces and just accept the fact that we most likely would not be staying to do any swimming 😬

Our parents arrived right as we were turning to go back out the door and say adieu to the place and try to come up with a new game plan for the day…

We told the man we wouldn’t be staying and he mumbled something or other about it being perfectly clean and fine but we politely disagreed and left.

(He did send an almost full refund shortly after we’d left, before we even had to ask for one, so that was nice to not have to message and fight for.)

The sister found a nearby park to go to eat the Una pizza our parents had picked up for us all. Luckily, eating outside was possible, since it was a beautiful, +16, sunshine filled day.

Una YXE

We enjoyed our lunch and tried to think of what to do with our day, as the kids rambled around, exploring on the path beside our table. Due to Covid, many things required booking a slot or weren’t open, thus making them impossible since we had no notice and no where to comfortably wait around for openings what with two babies, no strollers and four kids 🤪

Pizza eaten and no real plan in place aside from probably going for ice cream, we walked over to the playground. Where the adults and babies simply enjoyed soaking up the sun as the kids ran off some energy from the drive and built up pool anticipation.
They all did fabulously and didn’t complain a bit about missing out on the pool though ♥️

Though our appetites weren’t all that large yet, we decided to go for the ice cream and then probably go on our separate ways, since the day appeared to hold no more real purpose 🤪

Homestead Ice Cream was visited and Lake awoke just in time to taste test the multiple flavours that were offered to him from the surrounding cones 😜

The parents decided to do Costco and then head back home as they had two grands with them.

The sister and her family found a second hand bike to go check out for their eldest and then had to plan according to their newest wee ones eating schedule, as to what else filled their day🤪

I showed Mike a pool with water slides at the Travelodge and he proceeded to immediately call and ask if by chance a room could be booked and the pool used but they couldn’t say unless you were there in person, if a pool slot was available.

We didn’t really need anything in the city so we figured we might as well head home too.

If you can imagine, the emotional state of the day was a little, ‘roller coastery’ 😬😜
I’ll be the first to admit that I do not respond to changed and unknown plans very well, so I was a bit stressed and that was showing up.
I think perhaps a little bit for all of us, in different ways 🤪
So it truly felt like a bit of a wasted day, though we’d had enjoyable bits between the stresses.

As we drove past the hotel with said pool and slides on our way out of the city, Mike looked at me and I can’t remember what we said but it was something along the lines of, ‘it seems dumb to go pay for a hotel room for a little wee bit of swimming but it also feels like it was such a pointless day, so do we check anyways?’.

Mike turned around and I fed Lake a bottle in the truck while he asked prices of a room and if there was a chance of getting in for swimming.

He came back out with a room key and a time slot 😜

We then got in touch with my sister before they left the city and their girls were dropped off so they could at least enjoy some swimming too.

We got into the room and I want to say it was happiness from being out of his car seat and not some deep, instinctual need to travel obtained from his father, that had Lake squealing and kicking in excitement at being on the hotel bed 😉

We had 30 minutes to kill before it was our turn to go into the pool but that passed by pretty quickly.
With the girls exploring every bit of the small hotel room 😉

*Side note – I got Lake a reusable swim diaper 🤪
The disposable ones are not only expensive but they also always look so useless and uncomfortable that I figured this way was worth a shot.
I think it worked out well 💁🏻‍♀️

It did feel odd to be in a hotel room, as lame as that seems and as sad as it is that it was just in the city an hour away from home 😅
The lack of travel since this virus nonsense really changed things, which we knew, but I didn’t expect it to feel so fun, just to be in a hotel room 🙈

We walked to the pool and I watched as Mike confidently walked into the water, giving Lake zero adjustment time before submerging him up to his neck 🤪🙈

I’m happy to report, Lake thoroughly enjoyed himself 😁

He wasn’t full of his usual easy grins, as it was all a bit much for the senses to handle perhaps but he relaxedly floated around, splashing and kicking and showing zero signs of displeasure.

Lake duty was then handed off to me, as ‘Uncle Mike’ had to take over from Daddy mode 😉

Quickly taking the girls to the waterslides, where they continued to go down them, many, many times ☺️

They convinced me to join them, once on each slide and I can safely report that I STILL abhor waterslides that are enclosed with tunnels and I went down with my eyes closed, telling myself just to breath and the tunnel would end soon 🤪

The slides ended into shallow pools of water though, making it a much nicer exit for the wee people, rather then being catapulted into the deep end of a pool 👍🏻

(To continue the vacation dream, I told Mike to imagine it was some far away church tower we were climbing up and around, as we ascended the waterslide steps 😉.)

Mike cajoled and puppy eyed until I finally gave in and let him take Lake down the slides.
It stressed me out a bit but Lake didn’t seem care either way and it gave his dad much joy 😉

We girls also thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub, where as Mike flinched away in discomfort 🤪

Our time allotment came to an end, just as Lake’s span of enjoyment was over as well, so that worked out perfectly.
He nearly fell asleep during the very short walk from the pool, to our room 😅

We detangled ourselves from the sopping towels and soggy swim clothes before picnicking on the bed from the snacks the girls had been sent with 😉

And, thus ended the shortest hotel stay of our history! 🤪

There was a spring storm of pretty serious implications (snow, rain and winds up to 100 km per hour) being warned about beginning in the wee morning hours, or we probably would have made due with our odds and ends and spent the night but I felt that was too risky.
And as one of the small persons pointed out, ‘we don’t have pyjamas though!’ 😜
It would have been a lack of Lake diapers that concerned me more than pyjamas, but whatever😉

We clamoured into the truck, satisfyingly tired and eventually lost each mini person to slumber…

I’d have joined but felt the husband deserved an awake travel companion.

Actually though, I just wanted to make sure I would still be able to sleep when bedtime came 🙈

We dropped the girls off at their house and so ended our ‘Staycation’ 😅

10 out of 10 – not sure I’d recommend 😂😜♥️

The Last Hurrah…

Day 5 – July 27th, 2020

Mike had told me to sleep in and rest up and I figured that wouldn’t happen, as 6/6:30 had been my usual wake up time.
I did wake up around 5:30 and told myself I MUST sleep… which I then did, until 9 🤪🙈
Which was maybe a little excessive for the plans for our day ahead but Mike said he didn’t dare wake me since I’m never usually able to sleep in 😏

Because of covid our hotel wasn’t serving the usual breakfast, so we had to head out to find substance.
‘Graze’ was where we settled in at and we got the Farm Fresh Eggs Benedict to share.

A few more little shops were entered as we meandered back to the vehicle and then we drove to find one or two more sights to let our eyes feast on, before leaving for Calgary and eventually, home.

We drove up to this view and I’m not sure of what it was called but we sat with our feet in the fresh water for a few moments while coming up with a game plan for where to go next.

I wanted to see Grassi Lakes but the only way we could see to get to them, posed a lot more steep, loose stone lined paths then I felt comfortable attempting to undertake.

So, we waved farewell to Canmore and drove on to Calgary, needing to make it in time to eat at ‘Monki Bistro’ before it closed 🤓

From mountain ranges and lakes, to roadways, vehicles and cityscapes… both unique and enjoyable to gaze upon in their own way… neither my favourite 😉😜

If you’re in Calgary, PLEASE go eat at ‘Monki Bistro’ and think of us 🙌🏻🤤
I ordered the reverse French toast and Mike got the brisket poutine.

They were both potentially flavourful but in the best way possible.

I’m the type of person that if a dish is supposed to have sauce, I want it to be swimming in it and these were both capable of being afloat 😉👌🏻

Leaving a restaurant utterly satisfied and pleased is such a good feeling. Like when you find something on a super sale or feast your eyes on an unexpected beauty.
Think I’m being dramatic? Maybe… but I don’t think I  am and we really, REALLY like food 😁

We needed to stop at IKEA to get blackout blind for the babes room, so we did a decently fast walk through of the whole place.
I found some smaller sized plates I wanted (been searching for probably a year, no joke 🙄) but of course, they were out of stock 😏
Nordstrom Rack and Homesense were also pursued and finally, we left the city.

Much later than planned… our estimated home time being in the wee AM hours and we still had ‘Drumheller’ to stop at… (but we’re young and free so that wasn’t a problem… right?) 😅

I’d told Mike we should really stop there. I’d been years ago and figured I could use a refresher but I thought he would think it was pretty interesting.
Turns out he took it on faith and didn’t look up a thing about it, so he was pretty shocked when suddenly we descended down into a totally different terrain than moments before😜

On our way to Horse Thief Canyon, we drove by ‘The Little Church’.

Which was much littler than I’d even expected😅
Surprisingly, Mike actually fit inside and it was a fun little stop… the slogan of the church being, ‘Seating ten thousand people – six at a time‘… literally, as it had six mini pews inside.

Horse thief canyon certainly evokes images to match its name… making it easily imaginable to visualize herds of horses racing through the valleys, cowboys with lassos overhead, thundering behind them 😉

Driving quickly because of the soon setting sun, we went to find the Hoodoos.

‘A hoodoo (also called a tent rock, fairy chimney, or earth pyramid) is a tall, thin spire of rock that protrudes from the bottom of an arid drainage basin or badland. Hoodoostypically consist of relatively soft rock topped by harder, less easily eroded stone that protects each column from the elements.’

The earthy tones and warm weather, making for perfect exploration inducing conditions…but we had McDonald’s to eat back in the truck and home to return to, so we didn’t take that exploration vibe too seriously 🤪

I made up my mind to stay awake with the husband until we arrived home and besides some slow/heavy eye blinks around Saskatoon, (1hr away from home) I did it 🤓

We never solidified a name for the child but we did narrow the list from three, to two 🤪
Not my favoured outcome but better than zero progress made I suppose 😏

In the end, it was a great trip ☺️💗

The driving having been so broken up for the most part, that I never endured THAT much discomfort, we had mostly beautiful weather, a lot of good food and for the most part, pleasant company* 😉

*I’m referring to myself and my husband for those who could think I was making mention of the friends/family we met up with as perhaps unpleasant, which was not the case 🤪

The time allotment was good too… we aren’t usually super slow lookers/observers etc. so we got to see a lot, in a semi short amount of time and also get a good idea of what we’d want to see again, if ever.
I’d say Jasper and the drive from Jasper to Banff, was our favourite part.
I’m sure there is much to explore around Banff itself but by that time we were fading a little and it was also so busy with people, it lost the allure a little, same to be said for Canmore.
Though we had much less time in Banff/Canmore so maybe we just needed a little more time to find their Jems 😉

We pulled up to our little home around 3:00 am, crawled into bed post haste and awoke to a sunshine filled +22 by 8:00 am.
The official end of the ‘babymoon’ and the start of unpacking, yard upkeep and checking off the rest of the ‘pre-babe to-do’s’ 😉
